Br. Colin,

I love Georg Tintner's Bruckner renditions on Naxos. I was listening to Bruckner's 7th conducted by Tintner - So glorious it is :):):)

I've made the point elsewhere... but I'm not sure what the best FIRST recommendation for a Bruckner cycle should be- but if a person gets TWO Bruckner cycles, ONE of them should be the Tintner NAXOS set!!

Tintner highlights! (in order) 3, 2, 7, 9, 6.
(disappointment- 5)

That aside, I'm currently working my way through the
Colin Davis/London SO recording of Les Troyens, by Berlioz.

I usually go for best performance rather than a complete cycle,
regarding the 9th IMO
Bruno Walter and Karajan's late 70's Bruckner 9th are equal for 1st place for this wonderful symphony.

Emilio Sagi's unusual stage production of Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville" with all Hispanic cast ( with - Don Diego Flores.. what an excellent job he does )

Regarding Bruckner, I have found his 1-9 symphonies on Amazon for 31 bucks and have also ordered Brahms complete Piano Works as well. I was thinking of canceling Brahms and getting the Bruckner one instead. Although, it does depend if I want to buy his Symphonies or the others solo Piano works. By the way, I have bought Brahms complete Symphonies a while ago. So tell me, what would you do, I am in a pickle!

I wish I had a crylic set up you could brush up my very basic Russian

Br. Colin

And I still struggle with Russian - Its not an easily acquired language. Btw, an average Russian citizen has a vocabulary between 2000 to 2500 words that they use. Aleksandr Pushkin, however, had a 22,000 word vocabulary - The man was not only a genius as a writer but he was a voracious reader too.

Br CD,
That sounds similar to the average Englander in Shakespeare's time say 2000 and the Bard about 15000, if my memory serves me right, I have not used my Russian for 45yrs so you can see how I would struggle

Br. Colin,

Shakespeare was a genius wordsmith with English as was Pushkin with Russian.

Do you think the world will ever witness another Shakespeare or Pushkin? My gut reaction is no - Those two giants ploughed up abyssal furrows in the fields of Literature. I perceive that they understood human nature in a way we other mortals can scarce comprehend - They lived in a time when there was very great human suffering. Yes, there is human suffering now too but...You'd think that there is a great bard toiling away somewhere in the world. The current recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature doesn't even come close to the aforementioned geniuses.

Back on topic: Now I listen to Shostakovich's 13th.

It comes from a complete set of Bruckner symphonies recorded by Barenboim and the Berliners.
Will have to look up Tintner in NML.
