Thanks Mat, I think I was checking the spelling while I was sending this post the first time. Oops. :shake: :nut:

As for VW, I didn't like the 6th... I prefer his earlier symphonies. Still got three more to go, though.
How did you go with the other symphonies ? did you manage the 9th. he does the same as Shostakovich rattles your teeth in one mov then gives a sublime slow mov to say sorry :) Colin

I am listening to Koncert Na Trabke Es Dur by Haydn and recognise a small passage which reminds me of "By cool Siloam's shady rill " One of my favourite hymns. Any of you church organists noticed this? What other hymn tunes remind you of similar passages in Classical music?
Greetings to all M.I.M.F friends and a Happy new year to you all. Sylvie:)

Koncert na trąbkę Es-dur? Isn't that just Trumpet Concerto in E flat major? You intrigued me with this Polish title, Sylvie.

I haven't yet. It's taking me a lot of time, I know, but it's not quite my cup of tea, I'm afraid. Will let you know when I'm done , though :D

Stick with it Mat even if it takes months or even years, for me it helps if it is played loud on a good HiFi set up, ipod or cans just don't do it. Colin

Today I sampled some Mozart: Marriage of Figaro, Clarinet Concerto in B Flat Major, and Piano Concerto #21 in C Major. I especially enjoyed the Piano Concerto.

I don't have a decent HiFi, Colin. Been using earphones instead.

Tonite I listened to two works by J.S. Bach: "Where Sheep May Safely Graze" and "The Well-Tempered Clavier". Both were courtesy of Youtube.com

My newly-arrived CD recording of Massenet's opera, Werther.

Of all Massenet operas, it seems that this is the one with the 'bullet'¹ ² (i.e.: the one whose fortunes appear most on the ascendency). The answer to the question as to why this should be so would make for an interesting study.

¹ I hope no-one will accuse me of 'employing violent rhetoric' with this word-usage.

² I guess that there's more than one way you could say this opera 'has the bullet.'

I didn’t know what to listen to last night so I fished out one of my old video tapes of the BBC last night at the proms 1994, Andrew Davis conductor and Michael Davis leader not related.
Evelyn Glennie featured on a 4 8va Marimba, not really my kind of music but she is one phenomenal player and all the more amazing as she is profoundly deaf how she manages I don’t know.
Bryn Terfel dressed in Welsh rugby jersey and carrying a rugby ball under his arm a man united cap, welsh flag and a Dragon sang “Land of hope and glory” was he taking the P…? there were the usual Elgar marches, Jerusalem etc and a very patriotic bunch of promanaders humming “no place like home” and waving their flags of various countries and doing their organised shouts.
The close up shots of the musicians were good, to see a Harp played correctly and the other instruments of course was a delight, also Paul Watkins was principle cello and made a couple of mistakes in his solo undetectable by me but the expression on his face said it all, what a fine player he turned out to be. So in all an enjoyable evening.
We used to get the proms shown each year on TV but that was stopped a few years ago.

I remember that one Colin, what a shame you can't watch it any more. It is such a good evenings entertainment.
