What classical music did you listen to today?

Rachmaninoff--Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op.18 and Piano Concerto No.3 in D Minor, Op.30

As per Colin's constructive suggestion this date, I now realize that I was negligent in my above posting, in that I did not include certain other data pertaining to the above recording; I shall now attempt to rectify these omissions.

To that end, then: I listened to Rachmaninoff--Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op.18 and Piano Concerto No.3 in D Minor, Op.30.
Both works are performed by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin. Pianist is Abbey Simon. They were recorded in 1990 on VoxBox2.

Colin, as you insist, I shall of course include in future these addenda to any classical music I might listen to and share with my fellow members.

Today I listened to Brahms--Symphony no.1 in C minor, op.68, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Herbert von Karajan.

I do not insist Steve but it does add a bit more interest, thanks, btw it would not be Karajan leading he would be conducting

Mozart--Symphony No.41 in C major, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Karl Bohm. Concert was recorded in 1962 on Polydor International.

Steve, how would you compare Karajan with Bohm in respect to what they do with the BPO?? I do not mean the Mozart V Brahms, but in general.

Colin, I really have to listen a lot more before I could answer your question in any kind of intelligent manner. I am trying to immerse myself in as much classical music as my puny brain--and my father's patience and extensive collection--will allow.
Let me do some more exploring and I'll try and get back to you on this.
Thanks--Steve

I'm really am sorry Steve I thought you were an old hand, just for the record I fall into the Karajan camp, he was the mentor of Anne Sophie Mutter (violinist) if you get the chance listen to her recordings with Karajan of the Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Bruch violin concertos they are marvelous

Hi Colin. No, it is my father who is the "old hand" regarding classical music; indeed, I've tried--and so far failed--in my attempts to have him join this classical music forum. I know how much he would enjoy it, and also how much knowledge he could bring to the table after a life time of listening. Oh well!
I shall take up your suggestion of listening to Karajan and Mutter; I'm sure my father has the works you mention in his extensive cd collection. Thanks.

Today I listened to E. Power Biggs performing the Four Great Toccatas and Fugues of Johann Sebastian Bach on CBS Records Masterworks. These works were recorded in 1971-1974 and re-issued in 1988.

I would bet he also has a good collection of vinyl, what turn table does he have?

Nope, can't find it. But they do have the Elgar with Du Pre and BBC SO conducted by Sargent.

Hi Colin; I hope you and your family are alright, as we have learned that there was an earthquake in your country.
Please let me know that you are safe!

Regarding my father, he does indeed have an extensive lp collection and used to have a very good turntable and speaker system--the name of which escapes me in my dotage. He has now gone over to listening to cds on a Bose cd player cum radio. I must say, it has excellent sound.
As expensive as it is--about $350.00--I am sorely tempted to ask for it as a gift to mark my 60th birthday this coming July.

Hi Colin; I am so glad that you are alright as I was really worried about your safety!
Was the earthquake near where you live or so far away--hopefully--that your neighborhood wasn't affected?

Anyway, I remembered that my father has a KLH stereo system. Although he no longer uses it, he still has it in his house. Everything now is cds on his Bose system. He still has all his classical lps.

I'm not familiar with that brand Steve I assume it is an American brand, Bose are well thought of all over the world.

Colin, I believe that the KLH system was of Dutch manufacture but I'll clarify that the next time I see or speak with my dad.
Regarding Bose, he is very happy with their product.
