Gord, absolutely spot on re: Horace Silver. You should also check out some his earlier work with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, which he also led--or co-led--for awhile. I've been listening to Roots and Herbs by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Miles Smiles by the Miles Davis Quintet. Both are simply awesome!:trp::clap:

Today I listened to the rest of Roots and Herbs by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Also disc 2 from The Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall.

teddy, june christy-something cool, i have that cd, it contains both the mono and stereo versions. i always thought they were the same, but apparently they are differant. the mono was recorded in 1955, and the stereo recorded in1960 witha slightly different personnel. by the way both albums are great. gord

I treated myself to Kind of Blue today. I'm working on So What and who'd know better how to play comping than Bill Evans.

The Classic Blue Note Recordings: Wayne Shorter. A magnificent 2cd compilation of Shorter's work with both the Jazz Messengers and his own groups' later efforts as well. Highly recommended for Shorter fans in particular and jazz fans in general!:clap:

Found a good series on the toob, recordings from Scottish TV, full programmes average 24 minutes each. Some hosted by Annie Ross of Lambert Hendricks and Ross, others by George Chisholm a great trombone player and Ronnie Scott.

I've not gone through the lot yet, but have found quite a few interesting guest appearances, example, Bob Brookmeyer, Buddy de Franco.

At over 20 minutes each it'll take a few days to pick over what's there.

A couple of examples

I notice some of the players in the band on the second season sessions featured in the Benny Goodman band formed for the UK and European tour in 1969, Lenny Bush on Bass, Tommy Whitle on sax, and George Chisholm on Trombone.

A few less usual instruments feature on some sessions, harp, tin whistle, accordion. Some vocals, a couple of jazz rock groups.

Highlights far me so far, a trombone duet George Chisholm and Don Lusher, Jimmy Feighan quartet (piano, vibes, guitar & drums) David Snell on harp, Lenny Bush's solid bass. Unusual pairing, George Chisholm (trombone) with Jack Emblow Accordion.
