Yes, Colin. There seem to be a lot of folk influenced themes in this wonderful symphony. As well, I think that I recognized some of the French song ''frere jacque" {spelling?} in one of the movements. I really do enjoy listening to this work and intend to sample the rest of his symphonies. Luckily for me, my father has a complete set of Mahler's works, so I know from whom I'm going to be borrowing!

It was a shock to the system, quite complicated for me to follow at the time (about 35 years ago) and the tonal sound a bit too much for ears that were locked into the classical and early romantic, it was Karajan and the BPO on DG + its a work that goes on for about 1 1/2 hrs, I am ok with it now but must admit it is not my favourite Mahler Sym

If I had to choose one of Mahler's symphonies, I'd go with the 1st.

Currently listening to Schumann's Eb major symphony, as played by Cleveland Orchestra with G. Szell.

I like Mahler...Unfortunately this guy never composed an opera...I am an opera guy...I prefer his "cousins", Zemlinsky and Schreker...
Mahler composed the overture for Zemlinsky's first opera, Sarema. Wonderful indeed.

Colin, Martin and Mat: Thank you all for your input re: Mahler. I intend to borrow the complete cycle of his symphonies {1-10} from my father very shortly. I really do appreciate all your observations and opinions.

Mahler--Symphony No. 1 in D Major, performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maurice Abravanel. An exquisite and triumphal work indeed. I especially enjoy the lushness of the third and fourth movements.

Brahms Symphony No.1 in C Minor, performed by the Berliner Philarmoniker conducted by Herbert Von Karajan. I found the last movement of this work to be especially stirring and powerful.
