Thanks Steve. I did read that when I was younger, although I can not remember too much about it. I would not hurt to re read it. I was thinking (and should have written) that I was after factual books. I visited Spain when I was 19 years old and was fascinated by it. Francos guards outside the public buildings and the wooden hats the motorcycle police wore. I could go on for hours.

Got you Teddy. Maybe some books on the volunteer American units who went over to fight the Fascists known as the Lincoln Brigades? If you're interested, perhaps I can do a little more research on the subject. Just let me know.

Hi, Teddy. I just found a book in the latest Daedalus Book Catalog called "They Shall Not Pass!". It is about a group of British volunteers who in 1937 went to Spain to fight for the Republic against Franco and the fascists. It goes for less than 6 dollars. I'll see if I can also find it on Amazon U.K., if you're interested.

Mikes thread about linking brains to machines prompted me to dig out my copy of 2001, A Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke. Like all good science fiction writers from Wells and Verne he was far sighted, coming up with the ideas of electronic reading pads and the next evolution of man into a form of pure energy and matter. His images of emptiness and desolation in space are quite moving.

@ Teddy, I'm sorry that I forgot to mention that the author of "They Shall Not Pass" is Ben Hughes. I also went on Amazon U.K. and found this work, as well as several others detailing various other British men and women who were courageous enough to volunteer against Franco and the Fascists in order to try and save the freely elected Spanish Republic.

This should be compulsory reading in schools Mat. Newspeak was a fascinating idea. Controlling peoples very thoughts by the structure of the language. Their emotions were subjugated by the deprivation and policing. We already have thought crime in this country. If someone thinks you meant a certain thing in their opinion, then you did and may be prosecuted for it.

Yeah, getting rid of the uncomfortable words and leaving only the safe ones was a brilliant idea, indeed. Scary and vicious, but brilliant. I'm not sure though if incorporating the book into the learning program in schools would be such a good idea. Lets be honest - it's not an easy reading. Would a teenager be able to comprehend all the intracies within the book? Plus, there are some parts that seem to be a bit too "harsh" for young minds at schools (for example the tortures Winston went through after he had been caught). But then, I guess it depends on a person. Some may be ready for it, others not so much. I personally would prefer to have had to read the book, but probably in one of the last years of HS.

I agree that it is mot suitable for most junior school pup[ls but should be read in high school. The concepts of power for the sake of power, cruelty for the sake of cruelty would be hard for young minds to grasp. But there are too many examples of it happening, especially among certain dictators
