To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee

Almost an accidental read as I bought this for my youngest some years ago. Last birthday she bought me Go Set a Watchman Not realising that I had not read Mockingbird so I borrowed her copy, and thoroughly enjoyed it.. A wonderful book written from the perspective of a nine year old girl living in a small town in Alabama, but not a book for children. It explores the attitude of the people in the town and their attitude to black people. Worthy of its acclaim and definitely a must read.

Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

Scout, the principal character in Mockingbird, returns to the town where she grew up having lived and worked in New York. Everything is the same, but everything is different. She questions the town, the people who live there and the people that she grew up with and loved. But it is not until she is about to leave, possible for good, that she is forced to question herself. Very different from Mockingbird and of course viewed from a different perspective but just as griping in its own way.

I have only just found out that Harper Lee and Truman Capote where lifelong friends. One of the main characters of Mockingbird was based on Capote and the circumstances he lived under as a child. She helped him enormously with In Cold Blood and was unset when he failed to credit her with the work she did, although he did dedicate the book to her. This is a relationship which I must explore as I am a fan of Capotes work, particularly Other Voices ~Other Rooms
