What jazz have you been listening to today?

I know the feeling with having lots of cd's occupying wall space. With over 1500 cd's, there will always be something different to listen to.

Obviously for you sir Corno Dolce :tiphat: 1500 CD´s - Wow and WAY TO GO :clap::clap::clap::clap:. I believe you have told me this on an earlier date. Now, I better understand the concept of your new home, where walls can be moved or retired, whatever needed.

But then, I know from your hundreds of classical music inputs here, that your classical collection of CD´s are way ahead according to jazz CD´s and you probably have an entire pipe organ collection as well, not to mention the personal interest in books and foreign languages. How do you ever get the time to work?

But as we both know and share, however strange this was when I first became acquainted to you, Pat and Keith are on top for the both of us, they may not be right up now for me or you, but they will return to the CD player shortly and for the rest of my life - continously.

This whole trip to Copenhagen, beginning with fare for train tickets for Copenhagen, beginning at the Roskilde Festival including a new taylored suit for me done by a taylor from India, but having lived in Copenhagen since 1971-something, plus a new white shirt with matching tie and new shoes (completely forgot to buy new stockings, though), plus food and drink and entry fees, ten pairs of extra underwear, a fancy dinner etc. etc. lots of Coca Cola though with ice cubes and lots of free tap water, it was incredibly warm some of the days. Well for me and Rene´ - and I have only spent in total in the area of 2400 dollars.

I wish for all of you guys from the MIMF that you could have been there. I strongly recommend to any of you to try it out locally, if you ever get the chance. Remember - we never know what happens tomorrow. This trip and every new day was a blast of excitement, surprices, smiles from everyone we met and talked to and above all true happiness having all that jazz available and to choose from and we laughed most of the day time. Probably noticed like two silly old men.

The Brad Mehldau Trio at Glassalen in Tivoli, July 12. The last of the more expensive sold out concerts by US top notch jazz musicians.

Brad Mehldau (piano) known for the past ten years as one of the new generation of very well educated and innovative piano players, like another new star of the jazz piano - Jason Moran.

Brad has made two albums with Pat Metheny the last couple of years, also on these albums Brad´s usual duo in his own trio - Larry Grenadier (double bass) and Jeff Ballard (drums) can be heard on the albums of Metheny/Mehldau.

I would personally consider Brad´s piano playing to be something between Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, if one can part these two at all. His compositions are like an escallator. He and the band begin somewhere and end up somewhere else, but it´s natural when it comes from the heart and mind of Brad Mehldau. Like a painter in front of the empty canvas, but in no time there are small stories and portraits on the canvas in various colours, depending on the excact mood of the artist at the time, when painting or here composing.

His melodies are sweet, but also border breaking for jazz and they stay with you in your head for days on end.

Larry Grenadier looking more like a buisnessman from a multi international corporation, than a jazz musician and Jeff Ballard mixing his drumming and cymbal work often using the clubs in stead of the sticks. AWESOME trio on the last night of the official Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2008.

On a scale from 1 to 5, I´ll give the Brad Mehldau trio a 4+.

Have you ever heard of an American mafia hit man from Chicago in the 1920-30´s called machinegun Kelly. In jazz reviews they title me as machinegun intet, :grin::grin:

What I should consider seriously for the future is, how many jazz festivals there are regularely in Europe in a year and then plan for them.

Rene´ has told me that both Vienna and Marciac in France like the Montreux Jazz Festival in Shwitzerland are good suggestions.

Don´t you have a Polish Jazz Festival?, or does one just have to show up on the common Saturday market place?

And whole lot of festivals in other cities where usually I can't go.

And of course I have my local jazz club (in the market place). I've been to Jan "Ptaszyn" Wróblewski (plays tenor saxophone; very famous musician in Poland) concert recently.

So the closest one is "Jazztopad". Can't wait to see this year's reportoire.

About the so far unpurchased Hammond B3 organ? Remember what The Beatles sang: "We Can Work It Out". I am on the job!!

Like I told you months ago. I can´t bring you any advice or anything whatsoever to embrace you for your talents musically, so I need to support you otherwise. Perhaps I won´t succeed, but as they say up here to the north, where the real feared Danish vikings lived around the years 700-1200:

"If you don´t try to do the best you can offer, you haven´t done anything at all".

George Adams on his album "Sound Suggestions", by the ECM Records 1979.

This album has two tenor saxophone players. George is one and then the German Heinz Sauer also plays the tenor saxophone and of corse the musicians in the backing group are awesome.

The jazz world misses the great pianist Michel Petrucciani.

Here´s a list of musicians with albums mentioned, where they play the Hammond B3 organ. It´s on a Danish site, but it says that Billy Preston is the best example and the most legendary of all Hammond B3 organ players, having both recorded with The Beatles on "Let It Be" and with a lot of other names you have heard of. It does not say here, but Billy Preston also recorded with Frank Zappa. Both Peter Mellin from the former Danish group "Ache" and Anders Koppel from the Danish group Savage Rose are Danish Hammond B3 organists:

I do have, in my appreciable jazz collection, albums of some of the very musicians you entered. For example Jimmy Smith or Jack McDuff. I have also several albums of the muscian not mentioned by you - the great Joey DeFrancesco. My "personal Jesus" when it comes to the Hammond Organ.

I've found out recently about Atsuko Hashimoto from Osaka, Japan. Also B3 player. However I didn't buy any of her recordings yet. Yet:grin:.

News on the Standards Trio double DVD, recorded 1985 and 1986 from Japan ready to be released from the ECM Records:


Jarrett Summer Standards Tour and DVD

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette will shortly begin their by now traditional summer tour, with concerts in France and Italy. Dates are Paris, Salle Pleyel (July 5), Turin, Teatro Regio (July 8), Rome, Auditorium Parco della Musica (July 12), Pescara, Amphitheatro d’annunzio (July 15), Juan-les-pins, Les Pinedes Gould (July 18), San Sebastian, Kursaal (July 22) and Lyon, Grand Theatre de Fourviere (July 25).

Simultaneously ECM issues a double DVD of the Trio on its first tours of Japan in 1985 and 1986, entitled “Standards I/II: Tokyo”. The DVDs were previously available, separately, on the VideoArts label, but have been out of print for years. The ECM edition has a total playing time of three and a half hours and retails at the special price of € 22,90. It may be purchased via the ECM web shop or good retailers everywhere.
