today i listened to charles mingus-the black saint and the sinner lady (cd)
dexter gordon- our man in paris (lp)
louis armstrong-the complete town hall concert (lp)
all three are great albums. gord

gord, that sounds like a really great joe henderson set. Might I ask as to whether you bought it from Amazon.com and for how much?
At any rate, enjoy. I've gradually been getting into more of his stuff lately via last.fm and now that my son fixed the youtube.com audio system, thru that venue as well. And I really like the way he plays.

hi steve, the joe henderson set i bought a few years ago in an estate sale in buffalo ny for the unbelievable price of 3 bucks. it is probably long deleted now, but you can buy used copies on ebay etc, but not for 3 bucks though. gord

today i got my three red garland albums out.
the red blues with eddie lockjaw davis- status (lp)
reds good groove with pepper adams and blue mitchell-jazzland (lp)
soul junction with john coltrane-prestige (cd)

Actually, gord, I had always thought it is because we have so many apple varieties that we grow and export from upstate New York. However, according to wikpedia, it was first coined by a New York sportswriter in the 1920's because we get "most of the sap".
I still really don't know. What's your understanding of it?

hi steve,i have no idea why new york is called the big apple. i have the feeling it is something to do with jazz and jazz musicians though.maybe someone else knows the answer to this question. gord :confused:
