Criminal Punishment - Your Thoughts

Capital Punishment is not a good idea, too many have been hanged or burned, only to be postumously pardoned years later when their real innocence is discovered. In most cases, if they were in jail/gaol for life, they would have been let free. Far too much ability for the jury to make a wrong decision based on prosecution lawyers' "bells and whistles" case evidence.

We certainly need something in this country to get it back on the level. Mike as MJ, Margaret as head judge, John and I as executioners. We will call ourselves the Fabulous Four. All in favour.....

Aye, I will be head judge, not sure I could be an executioner. I do worry a bit about the wrong person going to the gallows.

Thats the difference between good people like yourself and some of the scum who walk the earth. They tend to play on peoples good heartedness when it suits then. But not when they are breaking into your house.

Imvoho, a very long sentence where the convict has his hands and head locked between boards and a sign stating the crime committed does wonders for redeeming the miscreant...

Excellent idea CD. Didn't we used to call that the stocks?
And pelt them with rotten vegatables.

And I have rotten eggs - Ewww, it will reek to the highest heavens :eek::eek:

Seriously, public shaming of the perp makes such serious changes in the perp's mental make-up that he/she will think 333 times before making another stupid move.

Oh Lord, if you think punishments in the US are mild, don't move to Denmark! We "recently" had a case of a young man who drugged and raped a seventeen year old girl... he got 1 1/2 years! We generally try to rehabilitate rather than punish and in some cases I agree with that, but on the other hand, when one is dealing with a person who truly does not feel guilt for his/her misconduct, rehabilitation is a long shot.

In this country they would have prosocuted the girl and he would have sued for hurt feelings. Buy a gun.

Reserve the gas chamber for the most evil of offenders.

Cause you have to admit the gas chamber's pretty cruel.

Truth is, I think the only objective here should be to eliminate the problem at the lowest possible cost.

I'm torn really. I'm sure this would vary somewhat from state to state but New Jersey found it's actually cheaper for them to just keep the dirt bag locked up for life.

The death row occupancy and appeals process is just ridiculously expensive.

Unfortunately, a rifle-round does not resolve the underlying issues, it is only a Band-Aid - Lets get back to the use of Stocks. Although, the perp will probably get lynched...

Going back on this thread (which I've missed for a while).
With regard to being an executioner, I think we are mostly likely to be right on a capital decision these days largely because of DNA identification methods.
Personally I would need to be totally sure, but then would have no compunction in pulling the lever (or whatever)
