The make subject comes across as a little diffident and daffy. The painting looks like it could come from Spain or Portugal. My other enfeebled guesstimation is Sancho Panza. I'll have to ask for another hint.......

Cavalleria Rusticana would be my next guess since it is quite often performed together with Pagliaccio.
In the *Cavalleria* the lead male role is Turiddu. The music for both opera's is written by Leoncavallo/Mascagni.

The painter of the canvas confounds me, although.

The piece of music is by Schoenberg. The name of the painting, which is by Jean-Antoine Watteau, is half the name of the piece. Hence the association...
