Hi, Nima; yes it is. I've already started enjoying it! And as my father loves classical music with a passion and has an extensive cd collection, I am also going to ask him if he could lend me some of his works by Brahms. Knowing that you are such a Brahms aficionado, what symphony or piano concerto of his would you recommend I start as a good introduction to his music?

Well, it is a personal pick and taste, but I would recommend his variations on Handel and his Hungarian Dances. Although, the rest of his piano music is quite outstanding; so starting with anyone of them would be precious. And as for his symphonies I cannot really pick any one of them out. He only has four symphonies so I recommend starting with symphony number one and working your way through it. I hope this helps.

Cheers

Nima, yes it does. I'll talk to my dad tomorrow about borrowing some of the symphonies. Thanx for the 411--I had no idea he wrote only 4 symphonies during his lifetime!
That has to be some kind of a record [no pun intended] among classical composers, no?

Well, Brahms was strict perfectionist and destroyed a lot of his work that he had composed; leaving only four symphonies for the world.

Well, I was going to buy Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 {"Titan"} but my father remembered how much I liked it and gave me this cd from his vast collection as a gift tonight while I was visiting with him.
This performance is by the Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maurice Abravanel.
It was originally recorded in 1974 at the Mormon Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah. It is on Vanguard Classics. Will listen to it tomorrow in my car while driving to my medical appointment. Can't wait!

Mat, thank you so much for your concern. Turns out I have a damaged tendon which I suffered during my last 2 weeks at work before retiring after I tried--and failed--to stop a fleeing felon. However, he was subsequently caught and is doing time after the incident with me. I loved the Mahler, though; that was the highlight of my day!

Today I bought Gustav Holst--The Planets and Richard Strauss--Don Juan, op.20. {both are included on this cd}. They are performed by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Originally recorded in 1961 and 1962 on Decca Music Group, they were re-mastered in 2007.

Today I bought from Amazon.com the following classical works:
Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.7 in C major, Op.60 {"Leningrad"}
Symphony No.11 in G moll, Op.103 {"The Year 1905"}

Peter Tchaikovsky--Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 and 6. This is a 2cd set from Deutsche Grammophon.

Recently I acquired the Choral Concertos(Sheet Music) by Arkhangelsky. Really nice writing by a master whose music is woefully neglected in the Western Hemisphere(outside Russia).

If the Beethoven 5 & 7 is by Carlos Klieber it is one of my favorite recordings. I am sure you will be pleased. It strikes me as the way these two symphonies should sound.

Hi, Rob; thanks for your observation. One of the interpretations of the Beethoven 7th I've bought is indeed conducted by Carlos Klieber. The other is by Leonard Bernstein. I can't wait to receive them and to start listening!
