The legend in jazz on the fretless el. bass John Francis Pastorius III aka JACO PASTORIUS, who passed away much to early years ago on 09.21.1987, on his awesome Big Band album "Word Of Mouth", recorded and released by Warner Bros. Records 1981.

On this album introducing some of the very best American jazz musicians and soloists for decades to back Jaco and his Big Band on "Word Of Mouth":

Michael Brecker - tenor saxophone
Wayne Shorter - tenor and soprano saxophone
Tom Scott - keyboards
Herbie Hancock - piano
Hubert Laws - flute
Bill Reichenbach - trombone
Othello Molineaux - oil drums
Peter Erskine and Jack DeJohnette - drums
Robert Thomas Jr. - percussion
and The Jaco Pastorius Big band

If you´re in to jazz and the fretless el. bass, this is your album. Awesome music. Unfortunately what happend to a lot of Rock musicians during the 1960-80´s, also happend to Jaco Pastorius. He couldn´t controle his alcohol and drugs addiction - not even while performing on the stage, and according to close friends of his, he would turn violently agressive towards anyone - in a split second, which unfortunately led to his own all to soon death, when locals killed him in a bar fight.

Shakti, the acoustic band created by John McLaughlin after the ending of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. John wanted to do something completely different for acoustic instruments, so his friend frrom the USA L. Shankar (violin) gave John the idea of creating a fusion band for acoust Indian instruments, the violin and the guitar. The result became the band Shakti with the first album "Natural Elements", by Sony Music 1977.

The musicians:

John McLaughlin - acoustic guitars, vocals
L. Shankar - violin, viola, vocals
Zakir Hussain - tablas, timbales, bongo drums, triangle, vocals
T. H. Vinyakram - ghatam, kanjera, vocals

Natural Elements was the first of 3 albums from Shakti. On the second and third album John added the electric guitar.

When you listen to a master playing his instrument, then it does not really matter what sort of or style of music this person play, but Shakti like The Mahavishnu Orchestra became a success as well.

John McLaughlin Quartet on his album "Que Alegria", recorded and released by Polydor Records, France 1992.

The musicians:

John McLaughlin - acoustic/el. guitars
Dominiqe Di Piazza - el. 4-5 string basses
Kai Eckhardt - acoustic fretless guitar bass

Belo Horizonte, the first song on this great album, might be the most beautiful song ever written by John Mclaughlin.
