I also am not a huge jazz fan, however I can appreciate pretty much all types of music for the most part. But Cleo Laine is just somehow magical to me. Of course I'm really a standard and ballad kind of person, so that might be why I like her so much...what a range! And, of course, Shirley Bassey is another fave.

Wow, you´re lucky to be living close to or around the Montreal Jazz Festival, which is a huge festival every year, like the Montreux Jazz Festival or the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, where I will go in a matter of days and stay with old friends in the city where I was born throughout the festival - from July 4.
First time in nine years, I have the ability to attend international jazz music played live. Look at the program below at the link:

On topic:
Chick Corea (piano) and Stanley Clarke (double bass) - Duo on the song "On Green Dolphin Street", composed by Ned Washington and Billy Draper. The album is called "Return To Forever", recorded by Columbia Jazz 1976, remastered by Sony Music 1997.
The 5 songs on this album, except for the song "Romantic Warrior", are from the three double album "Return To Forever Live" with Al Di Meola (guitars) and Lenny White (drums) as well and the RTF Big Band 1976.

Steve Swallow Trio on the album "We Three, Three For All", by Challence Records 2006.
I have known of Steve Swallow, since I first became acquainted with Gary Burton back in the 1970´s on the album "Ring" by The Gary Burton Sextet. Mr. Swallow is a highly professional musician, who has performed and recorded with everyone in jazz, who means something to jazz. Only post his fifty years birthday, he coupled up with Carla Bley musically as well as privately. He has recorded more than 10 albums over the years in his own name.

Pat Metheny born in that very innovative year of 1954, here on his quintet double studio album "80/81", by the ECM Records 1980.
Pat Metheny still at that time a young man, but a phenomena on the guitar and as a jazz musician throwing an invitation to four of the most important jazz musicians around at the time. Dewey Redman, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, and Jack DeJohnette. All musicians a lot older than Pat, having all played for more than 30 years each of them at the time. Highly experiences live performers, who can sit in on any stage at any time, improvise on the stage and in the studio, and around the world in their own groups and with everyone else. Four ikons in contemporary jazz on each their instruments, who at the same time love top notch interaction from each other in the studio on "80/81". One can feel the energy listening, today for the 739. time (or so). In short the very best musicians for the compositions made and prepared for by Pat on this album.
The opening song "Two Folk Songs" composed by Pat and Charlie Haden more than twenty minutes of playing time, beginning with the twelve string acoustic guitar in a speedy velosity from the beginning, completely surprising. This song is the very best song on the album IMHO, Ornette Coleman has delivered one song "Turnaround", and the song "Open" on CD 2 is a totally improvised studio set up, and the rest of the 8 songs are all from the hands and heart of the phenomena Pat Metheny, a lad from Missouri, USA who belived in himself and wanted to share his jazz guitar dreams with the rest of us always hungry for more albums.

Gary Burton on his "Reunion" album, by the GRP Records 1990.
On this album Gary has invited former co-musicians of his from former albums and bands touring around the world. Gary Burton himself having remained at the top of any jazz instrumental poll, playing vibraphone and marimba for 42 odd years in more connections and bands of his own, than most jazz musicians can ever dream about.
He is a distingquished member of the team of teachers of the Berklee School of Music. No one else but Gary Burton has brought life to the vibraphone and marimba as equal instruments in jazz for the past 35 years.

If I should mention one disability of Gary Burton then I would say he almost never composes songs for his bands, while with Chick Corea playing in duo they both create.

To another path in contemporary jazz. John McLaughlin on his album "Live at The Montreuz Jazz Festival" 16 CD´s in a box set, which I am the proud owner of. Remastered by Warner Bros. Schwitzerland 2000.
The album are a collection of John´s favourite groups playing his own compositions expanding 24 years from 1974-1998.

Back to Armando Anthony Corea aka Chick Corea born 06.12.1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA. His father played the trumpet and he was the band leader as well. Chick played the piano from the age of four, while studying with a private teacher. Studies at Columbia University and Julliard School of Music. Chick´s first job as a profesional pianist was in 1962 with Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo playing latin american music.
From 1964-66 Chick played with Blue Mitchell (trumpet), later in 1967-68 with Stan Getz (tenor saxophone) and from the late 1968 with The Miles Davis different electric bands.
Chick genereted his own band Circle with Dave Holland (double bass) and Barry Altschul (drums) with Anthony Braxton (soprano and baritone saxophone) from 1970.
Then back to Stan Getz shortly in 1971, and then he originated the Return To Forever acoustic band in the middle of 1971. The RTF then was Flora Purim (vocals, percussion) Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone, flute) Stanley Clarke (double bass) and Airto Moreira (drums, percussion), the latter whom Chick knew from the Miles Davis Electric Band back in 1969-70 among the musicians the new John Mclaughlin (el. guitar).
In 1972 Chick founded The RTF Electric Band. At the same time he added the keyboards and synthesizers to the performance on the piano and the el. piano, the group now with Bill Connors (el. guitar) Stanley Clarke (el. basses and double bass) and Lenny White (drums). From 1973 Al Di Meola replaced Bill Connors on the el. guitar. Five marvelous albums was released from The RTF Electric Band from 1972-76.
During the 1980´s Chick has created new groups on and off, mostly bringing new talented ´jazz musicians to the stages and the recording studios in his various groups both electric and acoustic.
Chick has played in duet and sextet with Gary Burton (vibraphone and marimba) and a string quartet for 35 years traveling the world.
Two remarkable albums also in duo with Herbie Hancock (piano) in the late 1970´s.
Chick´s life long personal and musical friendship with Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone) has been noted on several live performances from 1970-2000, mostly in quartets and quintets. In duo with John Mclaughlin as well many a time over the years.
In 1978 with a new acoustic band Three Quartets - feat. Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone) Eddie Gomez (double bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) along with an acoustic trio feat. Miroslav Vitous (double bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) interpretating the music by Thelonious Monk.
From the year 1980 he originated a new Chick Corea Electric Band with Eric Marienthal (saxophones), Scott Henderson and later on Frank Gambale (el. guitar), John Patitucci (double bass, el. bass) and Gary Novak and the monster drummer Dave Weckl from 1980 to-
Playing in a trio with John Patitucci and Dave Wekcl as well 1980-1990.
Then the sextet Remembering Bud Powell came about with Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone) Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone) Wallace Rooney (trumpet) Christian McBride (double bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) 1994.
To be followed by another new sextet in 1994 - Origin feat. Steve Davis (trombone) Steve Wilson (flute, alto and soprano saxophone, clarinet) Scott Sheppard (flute, soprano and tenor saxophone, clarinet) Avishai Cohen (double bass) and Adam Cruz (drums).
In 1995 the quartet feat. Bob Berg (tenor and soprano saxophone) John Patitucci (double bass) and Gary Novak (drums).
Solo piano concerts playing standards and his own compositions as well from 1978-96.
In the trio Past, Presense and Future with Avishai Cohen and Jeff Ballard (drums) 2001.
With The London Orchestra and the sextet abowe in 2005 on the album "Spain".
