How about THE NICE (Kieth Emerson,Davy O'list,Rick Van DerLinden, Greg Lake And Fripp) and you need to look at Rick Wakeman,Bruford, Jon Anderson and Squire ( Yes ), Syd Barrett, David Gilmour, Roger Waters Pink Floyd ) and King Crimson Fripp,Giles, Greg Lake, Bufford.
As you can see these artist switched from band to band. How can you ask which band is better than the other, when you do this you need to ask when, It all depends which member was with band at which time.

hey some friend of mine recommended TOOL also. i forgot to go check it out. i will.

TOOL is beautiful and organic music. Art of the highest caliber, imo. Gorgeous basso ostinati intertwining with the guitar's variations and developments. The drums layered and complex, driving the music with compound time and mixed meter perfectly integrated. Nothing ever feels forced or unnatural. Enthralling vocals that express the emotional content of the poetic lyrics with real sincerity. I know I sound pedantic, but I can't help it. I absolutely love them.

Genesis - Greatest progressive band

One has to be careful which words are used in this context. Most influential, probably King Crimson or Yes. But greatest Progressive rock band...genesis. Not individuals but the combination of great instrumentalists combining to create a back catelogue that changed and progressed through the 70's and 80's developing with the time and market demands. Live they were amazing, and the only band with mutiple 12 string guitars which has to be the most beautiful sound ion the world ( Ripples and entangled for example). Pink Floyd wrote some great tunes and had a relaxed feel, but they also wrote some real crap (the final cut??) Fav song has to be the live Dancing on the volcano/Los endos from seconds out - I am a guitarist but I love to play 'airdrums' to that and when the mellotron choirs come in ahhhhhhhhh.

I wouldn't describe Opeth as 'hackneyed and contrived' at all.

Both Opeth and Tool should be applauded and respected for their ability to redifine their own sound and stretch the boundaries of the genre they have been placed in by their reviewers.

To be able to produce consistently good albums over a long and varied career, that continue to bemuse and enthrall in equal measure, is something both bands can be very proud of.

My favorite progressive rock band is King Crimson!!! I believe it's by far the most incredible band!!! Although there are so many really good bands especially from 70's!!!!

As a survivor of the sixties and a pro player from the 70's, and not racist at all, Miles Davis' lineup for Bitches Brew is the most progressive and influential album from these art-rock times. Being influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Miles wanted to make a similar statement. He invited Herbie Hancock to play keys, only making him use a Fender Rhodes, an electric piano, for the first time. Herbie later found his own synth fame. Miles also had Chick Corea on keys, who went on to jazz-rock fame with Return to Forever. Just look at the other musicians who all went on to greater musical styles and fame after that musical eruption. John McClaughlin on guitar, for example.
If all you do is add up the various album sales and band poll wins, this album is it. What Jimi did with his own overdubs, and Stevie Winwood on keys, Miles created with live musicians. Electric Ladyland and Bitches Brew, what a two.

John, I couldn't agree with you more on your observations and analyses in this post. In fact, one of the great tragedies of Hendrix dying at such an obscenely young age as he did is that Miles Davis wanted to get together with him and produce an album--wow! One can only imagine and dream about what a dynamite team they would have made! If I'm not mistaken, I believe that Bitches Brew owed a lot of its inspiration to Electric Ladyland. And I am pretty sure that at some point, Miles would have--privately or publicly--acknowledged this "debt" to Hendrix. Two more awesome artists and albums in the annals of music--any music-- history would be hard to find indeed.:tiphat::clap::clap::tiphat:​
