Tchaikovsky - Marche Slave

The main theme is powerful beyond belief. So cold and ruthless yet beautiful and exotic.

Have you been listening to any classical music today? If so, what was it, who wrote it, who performed it, and what were your thoughts about it?
I've been feeling a little "tempest-tost" lately- so what's a suitable work for that frame of mind?

Wagner The Flying Dutchman-- Conductor- Wolfgang Sawallisch
Bayreuth Festspiele Orchestra & Chorus
Daland- Josef Greindl
Senta- Anja Silja
Erik- Fritz Uhl
The Dutchman- Franz Crass

From the "bargain-of-the-century" 33-disc Decca "Wagner Cube" containing all the Wagner operas from 'Dutchman' on.

Orchestra & Chorus constitutionally suited to a committed performance- but the true shining star of the set is Silja, who's been described as the Tebaldi of the Germanic repertoire.

It seems like nowadays I listen to nothing but Widor.

Today I didn't listen to much CLASSICAL music, but in the car traveling home from Thanksgiving I listened to various radio stations and my sister's iPod.

Classical-wise?

Violin concerto in E major by Paganini

Yup. That's it xD But tonight I'll tell you that I'll fo sho listen to Widor's Toccata (FAVE SONG BTW!!). Maybe the Allegro Vivace of his Symphony No 5 in F minor. Love the chord progression. It's unpredictable! I love French Romantic, probably my fave type of classical music.

Ah my dear, you could do much worse than Widor...I'm quite partial to him myself!

Last listened:
J.S. Bach- "Dorian" Toccata & Fugue, BWV 538 played with great gusto by the late Karl Richter at the famous 1714 Silbermann organ of Freiberg Cathedral, in all it's shaky-winded, unequally-tempered glory...Great stuff!

heehee. I try to listen to others, but when my iPod's on shuffle, it always seems to land on something Widor! XD
Today? I listened to Christmas music played with orchestras, like Joy to he World.

Today I've been listening to Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony The Polish, live recording from Hamer Hall, Melbourne with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Love the orchestra very much (and no, not just because I'm an Australian) and love their very "European" sound.

Tosca, she's as stupid as her sister Butterfly, why the pair of them just didn't deal with the men in their lives by murdering them is beyond me?

Bizet's Carmen; the Toreador theme - Giuseppe de Luca singing in a 1935 black and white version on the arts channel. Excellent. Looks like it's from a film...
