How long have you been into Bax? For some unknown reason I always considered him much too modern for my tastes but purely on an impulse I acquired the Handley set with the BBC Philharmonic (his second set) and am amazed by them I have just finished having a first listen to the set, what have I been missing all these years, I did not think much of Tinker bell sorry Tintagel. but I now have a new search and listen project. Did you pick up on his reference to a Shostakovich sym in his 5th (Bax's) Sym?

Colin, I have just started listening to Bax so I don't really have any kind of solid fix--so to speak--on him yet. I will definitely listen to his 5th Symphony and see--or rather hear--if I can pick up on any type of Shostakovichean {?} influence. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try and figure out which symphony it is, then.

Steve, have a quick listen to Shostakovich's 7th "Leningrad" just 3-4min of the 1st mov and you will pick out the 5 note motif you will recognise it as soon as it comes up, it is repeated throughout the movement with slight variations. Then give Bax's 5th a spin, again the 1st mov and you will hear this motif come up but only a few times it also is very similar to Sibelius's Symphony No. 4. These guys borrow from each other all the time. if a pop song writer did it they would be sued.

Colin, You are absolutely right about the Bax 5 echoing some of the Shostakovich "Leningrad" Symphony. Both have the same military type march theme in their first movements, with the Bax occurring right at its beginning, while the Shosty one happens at about 7-8 minutes in. Good pick-up on your part; well done! :alc:

It is amazing what you can detect if you listen instead of hearing.

I'll have to re-listen to the Sibelius 4 before commenting on this. I definitely hear the Shostakovich 7th influence in the opening of the Bax 5th.
