@John Watt's apartment, an audio-video mash-up,
featuring a large book with original prints, as new,
the tales of Sheherazadne, from Arabian Nights,
with, a lo-and-behold new, used cassette I bought,
of Rimsky-Korsikof's symphony, "Sheherazadne".

I hear the tamborine and the draw of the hookah,
more than the hot, blowing sand.

Total cost, $2.50.

Franz Schubert--Symphony No.9 in C Major, D 944 {"Great"}, performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Gustav Mahler--Symphony No.6 in A Minor {"Tragic"}, featuring the James Levine led London Symphony Orchestra.

Found this and thought about you, Steve.

Hi, Mat. I just viewed the Carlos Kleiber link and absolutely loved it; he seemed to so enjoy what he was doing and showed such empathy with and respect for both the music and the musicians. Very moving. And when he was talking about the "pretty woman with long legs", she is exactly the type of girl whom I took to see this opera at Lincoln Center in 1977. Both of us were graduate students at the time, attending the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University; I never got the girl, but I think she enjoyed seeing the performance, and it was an interesting time for me.
Anyways, I thought you might enjoy this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=hwZgaYrxtic.

Gustav Mahler--Symphony No.9 in D Major, featuring the James Levine led Philadelphia Orchestra.
Anton Bruckner--Symphony No.0 in D Minor {1869 Version}, performed by the Wurttemberg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Roberto Paternostro.

I'm glad you found it enjoyable, Steve. I'd never seen him "outside the concert enviorment". I was surprised to see how witty he was during the rehearsal and at the same passionate and engaged in what he was doing. Seems like the orchestra liked that attitude, too.

Thanks for that link. The music was great, but I was disappointed that Kleiber's performance was cut after six minutes. It kind of left me wanting to hear more. And as for the other half of the clip. Well, a few years ago I attended a very similar concert. Anne Sophie Mutter was playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto, unfortunately she wasn't accompanied by the Berliners, just a local orchestra, but the conductor was Krzysztof Penderecki himself. A memorable concert - I'm glad I was able to be there.

And here's something I just found. Beethoven's 9th performed by a Japanese orchestra, soloists and a choir of 10 000 (!!) people:
