Unusual candy from the past

When I first moved to Canterbury about 45 years ago there was a little sweet shop in a very old building with a crooked door, run by 2 elderly brothers. The sweets were nearly all home made such as barley sugar twists and bullseyes. Proper sweet shop, sadly long gone.

Are you talking about the "What ye ma call it?" bar? I can
find them where I live. Just go to Walmart.

Judy, I think what you are referring to is known as the "Whatchamacallit" candy bar, which I remember being sold for a very short time in downtown Brooklyn [where I was working warrants] in the early eighties. I did not know they are still being sold by Walmart's. Thanks for the 411.

p.s. I don't think it's what Teddy is talking about in his post.

Found a web site that sells blackjacks and fruit salad. Sadly no longer 1/4p each. (960 for £1.00)

Hi Judy and how are you? I was in my local CVS yesterday and guess what I saw--that's right--our old friend the 'Whatchamacallit" candy bar. When I go back later in the week, I'll probably buy one--or two--and think only kind thoughts of you as I devour--oops, I mean eat it. Thanks again for reminding me that it still exists after all!

Seaside rock is in my opinion best eaten when old. It becomes softer so you do not break your teeth on it. Being surrounded by resorts who all sell their own rock I never eat it these days. We had a wonderful little shop in Ramsgate which sold all manner of items made from rock, including bacon and eggs on a plate and babies dummies. Now also closed.

They are long sticks of hard candy, with the name of the seaside resort running all the way through them. No holiday resort would be without them. I can not find a link but if you google - seaside rock candy - you should find sone examples

@ teddy - your teeth not quite up to the challenge any more?

I agree - we can buy your "rock" here, or at lest a variation of it, it's quite delicious but it's been ages since I've had some

CT64 I do not think anyones teeth are really up to it. Although I have only one tooth on a bridge at the front I am scared of losing it. Glad you have experienced that childhood delight. Steve , all sorts of flavours but predominately peppermint. I will gladly send you a sample if you wish, but mind your teeth, unless you are willing to let it mature.

Thanks for the offer Teddy, but I think I'll pass as I have a dental appointment within the next month or so.

There is also a product called Edinburgh rock which is made in smaller sticks and is softer, with a subtler flavour. Better for oldies

Judy as a yummy science experiment we would dissolve sugar in water and suspend a string in the mixture. As the water evaporated crystals would form~Ahhh science at it's finest! :)
