How many of you ever enjoyed rock candy. You know the little
crystals made of sugar. I just bought some yesturday and some
yahoo put a thread in it. Looks like they want you to eat candy
and floss at the same time!

Yeah - I liked that rock candy in my younger years. On the Frisian Islands of Northwestern Germany, people who drink coffee or tea will put a large sugar crystal in their cup which dissolves very, very, very slowly.

Couldn't do that rock candy as a kid ... wore stupid braces ... spent more time flossing and brushing than I spent eating . The attraction to that candy waned after I finally got rid of my "metal mouth".

Really? I had to wear braces as a kid too (ugg, hated it!) and the doctor actually prescribed sucking on candies ;) I was very happy about that ;)

The part that I hated the most about braces were the re-wiring and tightening and all those long wires hanging out waiting to be cut off. What followed was three days of eating soup and soft cheese ... just when I could almost bite into an apple, it was time for another rewire session.

Did you also have to wear that facial "auto bumper" thingy at night, too? Made for a great AM radio antenna though .

I dont remember, but I think so. NIght was actually the best time to wear it, cause it didnt annoy the heck out of you then ;)
I remember the worst part of it was, at least in the beginning, it made you talk weird so It was embarrasing to go to school ;( but after a while it got ok.

I wore braces too. Instead of the mask I call it mine used rubber
bands to do the pulling and sometimes they would snap and cut
my tongue leaving it sore for a while. Maybe that's why some of
us have bad teeth today is from the darn braces we wore as kids.

At least you have teeth of your own ... keep those you got as the alternatives are not that pleasant: implants or dentures.

And then there was Pez Candy with its neat dispenser.
Anyone remember the Seinfeld episode about the Pez dispenser?

You guys are talking about the nestle crunch bar. You can still find
them.

Yes, there is that one. But the one I'm talking about was made by a Canadian choc. company. It was more better. Nielsen? Something like that. Although that sounds Danish. Maybe I spend too much time here; it's affecting my memory.

 Good one, Judy. Maybe they put the thread in for manufacturing purposes? Dunno.

Ha! Seems quite a few of us had 'railroad tracks'; me too! Actually, it turns out I shouldn't have. I've been told that I was too young, and that they didn't know back then that it was too early to start that treatment. So now I have to be careful, because the ball joint where the jaws attach is worn away now. That's why I can't chew gum anymore. Plus I'm a teeth grinder; I grind my teeth when I sleep. So I have to wear a mouthpiece at night. Annoying, but that's what the dentist (a new one) says to do. At one point, my jaw was stuck open for like two weeks. Needless to say, eating was a problem. Anyway, no such problems since I have the mouthpiece. He's a good dentist.

Wow, that must have been hard with your jaw ball. I cant imagine what it would be like to have your jaw get stuck....

did it get unstuck by itself?

Well, it was more annoying than anything else. Kinda painful too; that happened quite a long time ago though. I had to take anti-inflammatory medication; that helped. I'm fine now; no problems since then, thank goodness.

Btw, I wasn't stuck with my mouth hanging open; (that would have been embarrassing,) I just couldn't put my teeth together.

Yes I have teeth of my own but they are not in good shape. All of the
upper teeth need to be pulled and don't want to because I can't afford
dentures to replace the top. So when I eat something I wind up having
to dig into a holey tooth and get what's cought in it while trying to eat
what I want and forget my favorite foods that have a crunch. That's
out of the question or break an already weak tooth where it
crumbles with a weird feeling. It feels like I'm grinding on
a sea shell.

Yikes ... can't be at all a comfortable situation ... eventually those teeth are going to have to be extracted ... before they get infected or completely rot.

rotten teeth - fits in very well within a candy discussion! :smirk: Thats the price you gotta pay for enjoying all that sweetness

Another candy from the past - Chupa Chups, little round suckers on a stick. I'd gladly enjoy one of those any time of day ;)

In Russia, they were advertized as "The Round Joy" (a little play on words, meaning joy all around) :D :p and it most definitely was!

I use to like liquorice allsorts.

Wine gums were definately not good for the teeth either.

One of my all-time favorites is a candy bar called Zagnut [sic], a crunchy toasted coconut confection. I don't know if it is still being produced today or not.
