You might find them in the local supermarket - generally near the rolls and muffins. I like them done in a toaster oven with strips of cheese on top, and perhabs some bacon strips added later - with some chow-chow on top. ATB!

There are two types I know about. No, wait - three. Green tomato, or red tomato, and a fruit type. It's not sweet, but it's not a pickle type of thing either. I melt strong cheese on the muffun, then add the chow-chow on top. The brand I have here is 'Habitant', though there are others. ATB! :grin:

In NZ it is the equivalent to Marmite "a spread and a flavouring for other dishes, be interesting to see what it is in Russia

Marval, you'll make an Englishman out of me yet! I am familiar with Trader Joe's having shopped there with my sister; she goes there often. Now that I know what "chow-chow" is, I can rest somewhat easier. I had thought it was some kind of pet food! Anyway, thanks for all the useful links you sent my way.

Steve I have tried both vegomite and marmite and I would say the flavor is hmmmmmm.....let's see hmmmmmmmmm...........................well it's kind of..............hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ahhhhhhh well kind of like a SALT spread. Yeah that's it. Consistency of applebutter but tastes really very very very salty.
Remember a song from the early 80's ~ I think the group was called Men At Work and the song was Down Under. They comment about a Vegemite sandwhich.
