Is winter too cold for you?

You guys have the wrong message. The water will be back on as soon as
the pipes are fixed. Right now since my house is over a hundred years old
you can expect things like to happen to it and I had him to turn it off so
that I won't have a big water bill and I'm trying to get rid of a pest of a
neighbor. I love him as a neighbor but I don't like a pest. That's another
reason. If he leaves and lives with his brothers, good ridence! I know what
I'm doing. Like Emeril says"there is a reason for my madness." Trust me!
Another reason why I want to get rid of that neighbor up front is that he
likes to get drunk and come back where I live and pester me. I don't like
that trying to live a new and cleaned up life as a christian. I would hate
to tell my church anything about that. But I do pray a lot about it. I
believe God is answering my prayer in his own time.

I confess (;)) that I don't get this Kansas story. Freezing pipes have nothing to do with neighbors, even landlords, but with maintaining a relatively comfortable temperature in the house!!! It was 0 degree Fahrenheit here, last night, but the temp. in the house was maintained between 65 and 70 degrees. The only time I worried about freezing pipes was when we had the "ice storm" of the century which Rojo knows something about, and as a result of which we lost electric power for five days, in the middle of winter! Now, that's a real problem! Candles, cooking everything on the grill outside and taking icy cold showers (I actually heard the kids screaming in the bath room :grin:). How a house cannot be heated while there's electric power and plenty of combustible material is, well, beyond me........

Well It's winter time again and this year from Dec 2008-March 2009 is
a lot worse than last year. Let's resurect this thread and talk about it.
It helps to talk about these things you know!

Aroud the corner .....

.... Spring is coming, but which corner? It looks like the somewhat brutal cold snap that has engulfed the north-eastern states and most of Canada may be about to ease off. Temperatures have been around -20C to -30C in the Montreal area. North east of here in Latuque they registered a low of -40C! (Thats the same in both scales - doggone cold). And I'm not counting wind chill... At least up here we are:cool: generally ready for such weather. One has to feel for the street people though.

Freezing pipes. Sometimes it's just a small hole in a wall -like where a phone wire or cable comes in to the house. If it has not been properly caulked a thin stream of very cold air can freeze just a small section of nearby pipe. If you can locate it - and get to it, wrap the pipe with a cloth or towell and pour boiling water on the cloth.

My general feeling about winter now - if it would arrive December 20th, and leave before the new year. (Grin). It's an age thing. :D

I with you Buch. After New Years is over I'm ready for spring. I can't wait
until mid to late March when it warms up. Then another problem. Storms
on up to early May or June.

Montreal has been experiencing it's own frigid weather of late. Three water mains burst last week due to the cold. And the snow continues to fall, adding to the delight, I'm sure, of the workers who have to dig through it all to get to the roads and then tear them up to expose the broken pipes. Luckily, I was not one of the residents who had water service disrupted nor was my area flooded as some areas were last week. One man on television had over a meter of water inside his home when the main burst just outside.

But yes, it has been a little brutal lately, so much so, that my daily trips to market have been curtailed to once or twice a week. I walk there and take a taxi home. But I still wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Right now Kentucky is getting hit with a major winter storm with the
works from rain to freezing rain, sleet, and later snow. If you ask me
I'd much rather it be just a lot of snow and the heck with the other
mess! Yuck. At least you can get around in snow. You can't with
ice and sleet everywhere. I will have to wait until next week to get
my garbage out because of the ice outside.

I was born in Michigan, but never got to experience the winter season there as the family moved west when I was but 9 months of age.

I have often thought how serene it would be to be snowbound, with a roaring fire, lots of chicken soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, on wheat bread of course. The rest of my living family experience this all the time and absolutely love it. Of course, they, like me, are all retired, too.

Heat Wave?

Well sort of... The storm that gave Judy so much trouble passed here yesterday - but it was all snow, and lots of it. On the other hand (mits?) the -20 to -30C temps seem to have departed.:)

Being snowed in is fine - but the reality is just as often the power lines are down for a couple of weeks. It can get mighty cold and miserable. Been there done that. Our local weatherman is talking about above freezing temps by Sunday.

For the past week I've done without power. Thank goodness for my gas
cooking stove to keep me warm. I've had to camp out in my apartment
with the gas stove and candles to lite up my room. I've had to do with
out a computer, radio to keep me informed with the weather, and folks
here some are still without power. Every tree in this city has some kind
of damage from broken limbs to just being snapped in two. It has been
a real nightmare but, I've taken it in stride. Every time I bless my food
I would add," and please help the electric company hurry up and turn on
the lights. I got to see some stars at night as they went over and the
moon. All of the food in my fridge has been ruined and I had to clean
it out and wait until I can start over. I bought some groceries but they
were all canned or packaged like chips. When it happened, there was
ice on everything an inch thick. It was horrible.

Well, it's the same month and 2010. The weather on the east coast
is to me a real disaster area. I feel for them with the 24 inches of
snow and more is coming. Kentucky will be hit again tomorrow.

I hope it is not too bad for you Judy. Here in the UK some places have had it cold and snowy, but where I am it has not been too bad.
