Is classical music really better than popular music?

An intellectual understanding of music is no better than an emotional / intuitive understanding of music, in my view. One may say that this passage uses certain chords in an innovative way which results in such and such an effect; another may find that this music simply moves the soul to ecstasy. Personally I'd rather not think about music. ;)

I'd rather do both, but I see where you're coming from.

It tends to me more intellectual, more planned, etc. But that's still not true all of the time. It's a different style that abides by different rules, that's all.

are intellectualism and elitism related at all? you tell me.

Intellectualism and elitism are related when people (generally the intellectuals) assume that they are superior for listening to more intellectual music.

It's always going to be hard to get away from the elitist and intellectual values which classical music tends to invoke in people. Think about the audiences for whom this music was created: all would most likely uphold traditional ideas of 'high' culture, with slight differences according to the historical period. I think it's important, when we listen to music from a very different era, to consider this and be wary - its too easy to fall into out-dated thinking habits. If one wishes to continue this tradition of 'high' culture that's fine (as long as one is aware of it), but to me it just seems a bit out of sync with today's world. The audience for classical music is way too diverse now.

Hi Gustav,

Maybe an understanding of Musicology, Music History, and Musical Theory would serve everyone well. It should be requied of all college students before they graduate.

Hi Gustav,

A Bruckner thread would be great. I believe that the MIMF management would like to see someone take ownership of it, otherwise it probably would be just one more burden fallling into the lap of Sir Frederik Magle. Maybe I'm missing something here - maybe I'm wrong. Or could it be just as simple as starting a new thread? I don't know - I'm just a peon.

Cheers,

Hi Gustav,

Yes, lets hope that it won't go limp. That will require some work on the part of those who like Bruckner.

Hi Krummhorn,

Ya know, if there aren't any peons around, who is going to run the Aircraft Carrier? An acquaintance of mine was a mid-level NCO in the U.S. Navy. He entered, by hook and by crook, the Seaman to Admiral program. Now he is the Commander of a Nuclear Submarine and a brilliant officer. Usually, those who enlist stay enlisted their whole career. Those who cross the bridge to become officers have an intimate understanding of the needs of newly minted Seamen and NCO's. I am honored to have reached the rank that I have. Those who want to become leaders must be servants to their fellow human beings. So, there is the time to be a peon and then there is the time to serve the peons as an officer who cares deeply about their charges.

Cheers,

Krumhorn, what is a peon. I'd rather be a cerious cat right now. Pop
and classical music can sometimes intertwine somewhere. I really
like both. Classical music can be used in church music or at a recital.

Personally, I distrust snobs who simply damn all popular culture.
Me too. And I don't understand anyone who limits themselves to one genre exclusively either, be it classical music, jazz or heavy metal. I don't understand anyone having disdain for any kind of music; it's just music, it doesn't hurt anyone. Personally, my approach to music is global, historical and all-encompassing. I appreciate all the emotions available from all genres. If the music moves me in some way, I like it. Naturally I don't like all songs and pieces, and I have my favourites, but they lie in many genres. Mostly in classical, but in all other genres as well. Of course I readily admit that classical music is the genre with the most complexities, (followed by jazz,) but that fact doesn't make the emotions produced by listening to pop, or rock or whatever any less valid. I guess one could say I enjoy a large palette of emotions; I won't part with any of them! (Except sad stuff; I can do without being sad.)

Even Dvorak used folk melodies in his compositions...

I have a fascination for the ways music has evolved through time; genres influencing genres, composers influencing composers.

Today I've been at the piano playing C.P.E. Bach, Ravel, an Art Tatum riff, an Elton John tune, a Queen song, and a Michael Jackson song I recently transcribed.

Music is music is music.
