Frederic Chopin, born in the duché of Varsovie/Warsaw from a Polish mother and a French father. Spent a little over half of his life in Poland, before moving to Paris at the age of 20. Died at the age of 39 of tuberculosis. I love his Polonaises, Marzurkas, Nocturnes, Waltzes... virtually every thing!

Hmm, can I post -

Józef Kazimierz Hofmann (born January 20, 1876 in Kraków, Austria-Hungary; died February 16, 1957 in Los Angeles), Polish-American pianist and composer.

Very famous pianist. Never heard any of his compositions. Interesting guy; from wikipedia- ''Hofmann's invention of pneumatic shock absorbers for cars and planes earned him a fortune in the early twentieth century. His other inventions included medical devices, a furnace that burned crude oil, a device to record dynamics in reproducing piano rolls that he perfected just as the roll companies went bust, and a house that revolved with the sun. He spent his last years working on improvements in piano recording.'' Apparently he was a child prodigy as well...

Still not sure about whether he qualifies, born in Krakow, 'Austria-Hungary'...

Can I get a ruling consensus?

From wiki:

Krzysztof Komeda (born Krzysztof Trzciński 8 April 1931 in Poznań – 23 April 1969 in Warsaw) was a Polish film music composer and jazz pianist. He wrote the scores for Roman Polański’s films Rosemary’s Baby, Knife in the Water and Cul-de-sac.

I had never heard of him - but Rosemary's baby is of course a legendary movie.

Lipinski was given a Stradivarius violin that had once belonged to Giuseppi Tartini (1692-1770). Still in existence today and known as the Lipinski Stradivarius :D

Karol Szymanowski would be the perfect candidate here were it not for the fact that he was born in present-day Ukraine, when Poland was part of the Russian empire. Sooooo. How about a woman composer and outstanding pianist? Maria Agata Szymanowska was indeed born in Warsaw in 1789.
