Your Musical Genesis

It started when I was real little. I would watch someone
at church play the piano and how they used the keyboard
to make a melody and I learned how to play by ear.
I didn't know to read music until I joined the school
band years later. Now I even have a piano gadget on
my computer when I want to play some music.

We had an old record player when I was growing up. I only remember hearing classical music on it. That was how I came to love listening to classical music. I did sometimes listen to pop music in the sixties, on the radio. That never had the same effect on me as classical music did.

For my 21st birthday, my parents bought me my own record player, and along with some record tokens from other people I was able to indulge in my own records and tapes. I was lucky enough to live in Yorkshire, where in Leeds there was what I would call a proper music shop. What fun I had choosing the music I liked, the first piece being Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, which I still have today.

My husband is a great Jazz fan, so I do get to listen to that and go to jazz concerts. I also used to go to music appreciation evenings, and learn about the composers and their music.

I will always be grateful for my parents letting me listen to such wonderful music. I don't play an instrument, I just enjoy hearing other people .

My granfather played baritone saxhorn in the municipal band. So when I was a child I went to hear him every time the band played. He wanted all the people in his family played an instrument because also his father, his uncles and his cousins did (a cousin of his was trupet in the RAI (italian television) national orchestra, another was in the Army band...). So I had to play an instrument and because a friend's of mine sister played the piano I got the address of a piano teacher. And all began...

I picked up my talent in music when I was real little.
I got one of those little chord organs when I was
about four years old and my talent grew over the
years with different instruments. The only thing I
can't play are drums. I tried those in a set. I would
get started with the beat going and run out of steam.
Other musical instruments I can play if given the
time to try out a new one from a flute to a pipe
organ. From a violin to a bass fiddle.

Started on accordion, switched to bone. Later took up jazz vocals and classical guitar. Studied composition in undergraduate (focusing on jazz bass) and graduate courses. Went right out and bought steel drums the next day I saw Andy Narell play pans at Northern Arizona University and joined their steel drum ensemble. I read two very thick books at the NAU Cline library; one on the music of Bali and another on the music of Java. I made copious copies of all the scores. When studying for my masters in Korea I ordered a complete Javanese gamelan orchestra set and made a cd based on Southeast Asian folk melodies using what I had learned in those books. Also studied world music extensively from books and especially from the encyclopedia of world music at the library at Keimyung university in Daegu, South Korea.

It's a pity that I am not coming from a music family and most of my family members do not play instruments. I like music when I was very yong when I even didn't know what the musc told me. What I do is just listening and it keeps me go on and always brings me new and novel things. Music drives me to have a different view on the world around. If it is possible, everybody can try to sing and play instruments.

I agree. It should be part of primary school lessons, as well as having exposure at home
