Anyone here like Elgar?

teddy

I'm still trying to acquire a taste for him; despite repeated listenings, none of his music has really "grabbed me" yet, including the Enigma Variations, but I am not giving up on him just yet! What's your take on him? So far, in my experience, the same goes for Arthur Bliss. However, I am very fond of many of Ralph Vaughan Williams' symphonies and his Fantasia On a Theme Of Thomas Tallis.

After much internal debate, I finally "pulled the trigger" on this 37 CD Box-Set of Haydn's Complete Symphonies with Dennis Russell Davies and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from Amazon:

.
I figure for only 25 dollars this is not a bad buy, and I really want to become more conversant with Papa's symphonic output.

Earlier today, from Amazon {on back-order}, I ordered another complete set of Sibelius Symphonies, this time performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Berglund:

Hello - new poster !

Most recent acquisition: Andre Caplet - Le Miroir de Jesus....beautiful choral music from 1920's France, on the Marco Polo label.

(Almost all my purchases are 'pre-owned', so some may well be long out of print !) Clive.

Steve. If you haven't already, played NIMROD from Elgars variations. It hooked me.

teddy

I am surprised that Steve did not respond to your invitation teddy after all it is orchestral  Now teddy if you want the true Elgar try the Cello concerto played by Jacqueline Du Pre this Youtube link is of the LPO and Barenboim I think they were married at the time, she made her name with this concerto, unfortunately she died from MS at a very early age her best performance of this piece is with the LPO and Sir John Barbirolli c.1965.

If you were able to appreciate the above and feel a bit more bold try Elgars Violin concerto by Nigel Kennedy

Actually, Colin, I did and just forgot to post about it. Alas, Mr.Elgar still remains --at least for me--a treasure waiting to be discovered, I guess. :banghead:

Patrick Hawes - 'Angel'.

Hawes is an English composer, by no means only of choral works (as can be seen on his website), but those are what I prefer of his - previously purchased the Lazarus Requiem.
Video clips on the website & on You Tube.
