@ Mat, That's an excellent rendition by Vanska and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra of one of my favorite symphonies. Great choice!

Yes, Steve. I really enjoyed it. And the fact that I finally managed to buy a pair of fairly decent headphones helps a lot, too.

Now, is Nielsen's First one of your favorite Nielsen symphonies or one you your favorites in general? Not sure if I asked you about your top 5?

@ Mat, Both. I also love his Second Symphony {"The Four Temperaments"} the Third {"Sinfonia Espansiva"} and the Fourth {"The Inextinguishable"}. However, the First will always hold a special place in my heart, because that was actually the very first symphony of his I tried {on Spotify} and from its opening notes I was hooked on this guy. Tomorrow night, I'm going to give his first two symphonies as done by Vanska and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra another go on Spotify; I bought the Blomstedt Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra Nielsen Cycle and am very satisfied with it, but I also really like Vanska's readings. I am also very impressed with some of the Sibelius I've heard him conduct as well.

Yes, Sibelius - I have a particular fondness for his Third Symphony in C major. Love it's cheerful opening and contrasting 2nd & 3rd movements.

Also, there is something in the opening chords of Nielsen's First, as you say, that drawn my attention to it, too. I will probably listen to his Second tonight.
