My fav scores? Mh, this is gonna be pretty hard, because I've always been a huge fan of film music and having to choose isn't exactly the easiest thing to do! ;)
Okay, then, this is my list (it may change, from time to time... you know!):
Undoubtedly, THE VILLAGE by James Newton Howard; man, this is the score; I cannot imagine a better use of a violin; every cue, every note is so perfect that, anytime I'm given the chance to listen to it, shivers run down my spine;
then, I'd say MULHOLLAND DRIVE by Angelo Badalamenti (especially his "Mulholland Drive", "Mr. Roque/Betty's Theme", "Diane and Camilla" (this latter literally melts my heart) and "Mulholland Drive/Love Theme");
surely BODY DOUBLE by my countryfellow Pino Donaggio (especially his "Main Title" cue);
then EYES WIDE SHUT (the cues composed by Jocelyn Pook are real masterpieces; her "Masked Ball", sung in Romanian spoken backwards, is a blast!);
last but not least ANTARCTICA by Vangelis, which is an electronic score, very apt to the images it had to comment.

I like O brother where art thou. Bluegrass music and gospel like that is
a part of Kentucky's history and people keep on playing Bluegrass. That
is our folk music. Especially the song Man of Constant Sorrow was recorded
back in just that era. Tennessee Valley Authority built dams in the most
western part of Kentucky just east of Paducah about 20 miles or less thanks
to president Roosevelt who got us out of the depression. Times were really
hard back then. Kentucky and Tennessee was just like that movie back
then. I guess the three escapies in the movies were supposed to have
been from the Eddyville Penatintury. Sorry I can't spell too good. So that
is a little history from kentucky.

i am surprised there has been no mention of Bernard Herrman, one of the greatest film music creators, if you have not heard it please try his music to Hitchcocks masterpiece 'Vertigo' in fact its hard to imagine those Hitchcock films without his music (Psycho the prime example)

Hello, just joined this forum and would like to add that since i started collecting film soundtracks back in the early 1980's, i find that i still listen mostly to the "golden oldies" such as:

Jerry Goldsmith's "Alien", possibly the scariest film music i've ever heard!!!:eek:

James Horner's "Aliens", excellent action cues.

Alan Silvestri's "Back to the Future", where can i get the complete score?????

John Williams' "Born on the Fourth of July", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Dracula", "E.T. the Extra Terrestrial", "Jaws", "JFK", "Jurassic Park", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Star Wars (Empire)", "Superman: the Movie".

Jerry Goldsmith's "First Blood", "Gremlins", "Poltergeist", "Star Trek: the Motion Picture".

and John Barry's "Dances with Wolves".

Every time i drive my car, i listen to film scores!

Does anyone know if a book about the career of Jerry Goldsmith is available?

Thanks.:)

Ok, lets have it, what are your favourite pieces from the movies?

i'm sure this has been asked many a time but as i can't be bothered to look through the endless threads here i thought i'd make a new one.

PLEASE ONLY PICK YOUR TOP 3, i would like to have time to listen to them. just put what they are called and what films they are from. it would be good if you could also explain a little why you like it... thanks ;)

Admin note: It has been asked before, and is now merged here with the previous thread on this subject.

Welcome to the forum, btw :)

Blade Runner has to be right up there, the music really adds to the atmosphere.

I was really impressed by the Natural Born Killers and Lost Highway soundtracks, both produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Not so much scores but more of collages of songs (from all types of music)that reflect what's happening in the films extremely well.
The CDs on their own are as much a journy as the films are, with peices of dialog from the films between a few of the songs which is executed perfectly.

Micky and Maloreys chaotic rampage translates well in a musical form but the Lost Highway soundtrack really is someting else.
David Bowies 'I'm Deranged' opens and closes the record. Sandwiching the rest of the album (the bulk of it being the brilliant Angelo Badalamenti) which drags you into Freds desent into madness and comes round full circle, just like the film does (those of you who have seen Lost Highway will know what I mean, or maybe not).

In short, a disturbing soundtrack for an equaly disturbing film. Probably David Lynchs most disturbing.

I listened to both these soundtracks before I saw the films, they get you thinking, that's what I like about them.
i hope that you get the chance to compose a movie soundtrack goodluck!
My favorite has to be
The Fifth Element by eric serra
the opera music is fantastice!!
Take care good luck
Lots of love

After what must be 40 years I have just purchased the soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy. Loved the book, loved the film and love the music.

For me, one of my favorites has to be Keith Emerson's work on Nighthawks starring Sylvester Stallone and Billy Dee Williams.:clap:

Now that I have been thinking about this question a little more, three other stunning soundtracks to movies come to mind. They are those to Lord Jim, Performance and Blade Runner. Talk about setting a mood--wow:up::eek:
