We took some young girls to a concert a couple of years ago all popular stuff but a Bartok movement from one of his St Qts + a short excerpt from Stravinsky's 'A Soldiers tale' were performed, afterwards we asked the girls if they had enjoyed the concert and the Bartok and Stravinsky came out firm favorites, a totally unexpected answer

I saw a concert with a young cousin of mine two years ago, where they performed some Elgar, Beethoven and Shostakovich, and he told me he enjoyed the Shostakovich the most.
I have tried to convert some of my friends over to 20th Century classical by playing them things like the Rite of Spring and Gaspard de la Nuit. I haven't been particularly successful, but I figure I can't expect people to love it straight away.

You have to work at it, I can take some but I have to be in the mood, I just love my Beethoven etc so I don't get in the mood all that often, I do have Quartet for the end of time and love the clarinet contributions

Regarding children and atonal music I have also found they are more open to it than the old jokers such as myself
