Yes Colin, I remember the coal man coming. They always seemed very strong, I bet their wives had fun getting their clothes clean.

As kids, living at the seaside, our summers were mainly spent wearing what we called sandshoes. Light canvas shoes with elastiic at the sides. It wasn't unusual at the end of the season to see that the parents had cut holes at the front of these, so the toes poked out. No point in buying a new pair for the last couple of weeks before school restarted. Do you think most children would find that acceptable these days.

There were no flip flops in those days, at least they were never seen down our way. Also not so good for walking on the hills or climbing over rocks. The sandshoes were a good cheap alternative to leather sandals. As long as you had a pair of scissors.

A thing in NZ is that the kids and a lot of adults go barefoot, it is not cool to wear any form of foot ware.

Have you seen much of Ronnie Barker Colin. The Two Ronnies shows are still repeated, but his individual shows such as Porridge and Open All Hours are certainly worth catching. They dont make em like that any more

I have a pang of jealousy at the moment. A client has a chest full of folio editions of THE EAGLE. This was just about the only comic I was allowed as a child, because it was so well written. And there was Dan Dare, in all his glory after 50 plus years. Oh the joy. I kept all my comics, but when I left home to get married my mother disposed of them. Oh the wealth which would be mine had she kept them. They also have a stack of JUST WILLIAM books, very old with Williams innocent (in those days) spelling of can not. Happy days.
