There was something on the idiot box a long while ago about synaesthesia which I really would like to see again because what little I saw was thoroughly fascinating, particularly given my interest in Messiaen. The manner in which colour informed much of his music due to his synaesthesia has always piqued my interest.

The doco I saw put it across as some sort of "cross-wiring of the senses" and I was unaware of other varieties of the condition such as hearing a sound and literally being able to smell something as a result - fascinating stuff, would really like to know more sometime.

Soubasse, why bother just trying to learn more?
You should be trying to become that and experience it for yourself.
I recommend taking Joe Perry's place in Aerosmith.
A couple of whacks with a mike stand should get you going, onstage too!

sigh... I know this is the era of appropriate touching, gloving, living and loving,
and I get enough of that without feeling involved, but I feel the need for a warning here.
Corno Dolce should be careful. I think he's got a rare form of transmittable synaesthesia.
When I read his posts I see glints like off a diamond head,
and the surfing on my computer pulls me into a pipeline of swirling Oahu blue.

And now that I live in Moscow, Russia I have to travel many miles before I get to an ocean - Now, If I can only convince my wife that we should settle down in St. Petersburg, Russia --- Well, the Baltic is only a sea, and a little one at that.........:smirk::smirk::smirk:

Colin - you are FAR too sensitive for your own good ...
I know, it can be a real bugger:cry: I even weep at films and the lyrics of certain tunes affect me quite a lot, silly thing like "In Dublin's fair City" oh well lgo.

Corno Dolce! Russia? Have you ever been to the airport at Arkangelsk?
Maybe the glints I'm seeing are icy falling snow,
and the blue is the sky over the distant trees.

Airport at Arkhangelsk? Yep, and quite a few others. Yes, Russia is my Motherland now and I Love her very much. A Yank like me loving Russia? Why not? The skies here can be very enchanting indeed.......

And all the new music I'm being exposed to really excites my optical nerves :grin::grin:

'nother teddy welcoming you

BIG WELCOME HUUUUG 2 u Gillis!

Fascinating! I didn't realize all those composers had it.. can one develop it? I have ideas on the subject, tried RGB as minor, major, dominant, that way BLUES has both meanings, eh?

Really, can one develop this ability? I also like your visualizations like "pulse up from the bottom of my vision.." Strangely I will feel one way about a song or phrase, like the last notes in Chopin's C#minor waltz (the little dog) but once I play the same notes, I "see" it differently - from harmonic analysis.. but mostly I feel the emotions of the composers (I think).

Drum beats are very interesting to me, they seem to pulse up from the bottom of my vision and make me feel like I am almost touching pulsing water at times. Also Montefalco, I've found that blues are very common and present in music for me. I find it by far my favorite color =)

Would all Mozart give you similar images and colors? Beethoven's would vary I suppose? fascinating!

Thanks googols for sharing this, I'm very intrigued and hope you'll share more about this amazing gift!

Thank you for the welcome =)

Yes blue is quite a present color in my views. At the current moment I haven't done any thorough "investigation" as to which colors and senses match with certain notes and keys. But I think I may try and get in touch with my university here and see if I can talk to anyone.

And yes, playing and listening is quite a different experience. When I play Fantasy in D minor. It seems much more dark and almost purple haha But if I am listening to the music without playing any of it myself the piano does tend to give off a greener color. Most piano has a green tint to it.

Mozart and Beethoven have some differences in the way the colors progress through the music. But they do show some similarities especially in the way the music flows in a directional sense.

Also emotions are very present when I am listening to music. I always have a feeling of how a song should feel and flow through. =D

Does this then mean that if a song doesn't flow through the way you feel it should, the sensations (emotions/colours etc) become more unpleasant?

In a sense yes, it doesn't become so much unpleasant as it is annoying. Because I can see very well how much better it would sound and feel if the song went in a different musical direction and such haha

Its kind of like looking at your room when someone has gone through it, you know certain things should be elsewhere =P
