On November 12th, music world lost one of Polish composers - H.M. Górecki. He died at the age of 76. Read more here.

May he rest in peace.

Sad to hear this, but now I'm wondering why it was I found out here and not on the local Classical radio station? I would have thought that the Sorrowful Songs would have been played a few times. I know he has his detractors, but respect and credit where and when it's due. Hmm... perhaps I just wasn't listening at the right times.

Well, he has left us plenty at any rate and his oft passionate music will not be forgotten in a hurry ( I also must admire a composer that can knock Madonna and Michael Jackson off No.1 on the charts!)

Wow, really? When and where did this happen?

Always sad to lose a composer. At least he was recognized in his lifetime, and I'm sure folks will continue to enjoy his work.

Hi Art Rock,

I think it would be really cool if a classical album made it to the top of the mainstream music charts. But that doesn't actually appear to be the case according to the wikipedia page.

It says the album "topped the classical charts in Britain and the United States" and "the recording climbed to number 6 on the mainstream UK album charts, and while it did not appear on the US Billboard 200, it stayed at the top of the US classical charts for 38 weeks and stayed on for 138 weeks." Which is extremely impressive.

However, I guess I must ask, which chart are we talking about? And why did it not appear on the US Billboard 200 chart?

Do we have any other info regarding this? I've looked around a bit but have had no luck researching this topic.

Should I start a new thread for this? I don't want to disrespect either Gorecki or the original poster, Mat. I guess I became intrigued by Soubasse's comment.

No problem Rojo, I'll admit my post was misleading since someone had given me the wrong end of the stick anyway and a couple of facts were confused (and I didn't quite have time to follow it up). The following was from the Sydney Morning Herald:

The Upshaw recording sold 800,000 copies in three years and reached No. 6 on the British pop charts, overtaking albums by Madonna, Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger. In the United States, it was on Billboard's classical charts for almost three years and spent 38 weeks at No. 1.

That's where the problem lay in that it wasn't "knocking them off No.1" as I'd erroneously stated, but overtaking the charted position of those albums, and making it to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Sorry for the confusion.

At least it doesn't alter the fact that it's a splendid work and that reaching No.6 on the pop charts is pertty damned impressive for a "Classical" piece :grin:

So then it did knock Madonna and MJ down the UK charts. Who knew? :grin:

I hope this is meant "tongue in cheek"!? Otherwise, I can't for the life of me figure out what you are trying to say or what your point is regarding this man's death. You are not really glad--or implying that this is a festive occasion and reason to celebrate--are you? :confused: :eek:
