There are some fantastic modern treatments that do not involve traditional surgery or its potential side effects. My uncle lived well into his 90s with the condition.

I'm taking Tamsulosin (spelling?)for enlarged prostate, seems to be working up to a point; however I was not happy when I found that it increases the risk of problems with cataract surgery; like which would you prefer, little or no control of the bladder or the chance of going blind after a cataract op!

One would think that with both prostate problems and cataracts commonly occurring in older males that they'd find an alternative, and it's no use stopping taking the tamsulosin, once you've had some the damage is done, or so the consultant told me.

Trouble is neither are fashionable diseases. I have not seen the Hollywood set doing any fund raising for either problem,

@ Nikam, Yes, indeed, thanks to you and all of my fellow members for your encouraging words. As I have developed another uti and have yet another catheter in me at this juncture, I probably won't know for a wek or so if the enlargement is caused by cancer or prostatitis, which I've had before. Anyways, I'll just keep fighting to the best of my abilities, buoyed on by how many of my fellow MIMF members care. Thanks again, one and all!

Or Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (or has that been ruled out?) At any rate, the etiology question was one of the first things that crossed my mind.

Keep taking care of yourself- thanks for letting us know what's happening...

@Steve, you are family. Please know that your wellbeing is in my thoughts and methinks the same thoughts are shared by the "actives" on MIMF.

@ Chi, It won't be ruled in or out until 8-6-12, when I'm scheduled to undergo a biopsy prostate procedure; I've already had the cyscotopy {spelling?} {front door} which has shown no tumors in the bladder. This was done on 6-14-12, and since then I have contracted 2 urinary tract infections, which has laid me as low and made me as weak as when I caught pneumonia in basic training in 1974.

@ Marval and CD, Thanks so much for your continuing good wishes and expressions of moral support; it has made me feel that much stronger and better able to face--and eventually defeat--this monster which has lately taken over my life!
