Very nice Margaret
You must be a cat person. We always have a working cat otherwise the mice come into the house from the fields/

After about 6 months of time, we got to the point where we could let ourselves think about opening our hearts to another cat.

We visited some shelters, and many 'Petsmart' locations where they typically have dedicated sections for pet adoptions. We finally settled on a 2 year old pewter/gray tabby mix that was previously named 'Thorn.' This cat was surrendered because the previous family had a dog that was aggressive to this cat, and kept attacking him. So why not say goodbye to the dog, I thought.

So we took him in, and (as befits his new life) we wanted to re-name him. Not that we REALLY dislike the name 'Thorn,' but we thought we could improve on it. Hot_townPhilly (my wife) at first suggested simply dropping the final letter. An improvement over the previous, granted, but still not optimal. She then suggested "Gershwin," which was even better. Still in brainstorming mode, she said "how about 'Huck?'" I said "if I'm going give him a literary name, it's going to be "Percy."

THAT'S IT!!

We (especially me) like that name so much- not only for the first-flush introversion, like his poetic namesake (you'd be initially introverted too, if you came from a family where you were assaulted, and the family continued to give aid and comfort to your tormentor), but also for the implicit pun involved in the primary cat-sound (PURR-see... get it?!).

So, the Philly family welcomes its latest edition, Percy.

As you might have guessed by my first post on this thread, I'm pretty lame when it comes to pictures. In time, though, I hope to learn more about what I'm doing, and add a picture of Percy at a later date.

Congratulations on find a new cat and may you spend many happy years together. We have had cats for nearly thirty years, all strays, except one, who came for a holiday and decided to stay. They are expected to earn their keep by frightening away the mice, especially at harvest time when the mice start looking for a new home.

I am glad you all liked the video. I hope your Mum likes it Stephen, I love the punk kitty. Your pictures are great Bill, I wonder what the 30's cat is playing.

No photo but a story. We picked up a cat from a rescue centre. A nice friendly black and white part Burmese. Five minutes into the journey it escaped from its container. Over the next six miles it explored the car, including sitting on my shoulders and laying along the dash board. As we turned into the bottom of our lane it climbed back into its box and went to sleep. Tom as my daughter christened him turned into a full member of the family very quickly.
