John Martyn moved from folk to rock with shades of jazz. Distinctive vocals and the use of an echplex gave him his unusual style which often blende various genre of music togther. His big downfall was his distrust, or maybe dislike of management. Widely praised and feted by other top class musician he was underated by most, who only really discovered him after his death. The three previous links in the post before give an idea of his range. Probably he is best knonw for Solid Air, from the album of the same name. Listen to him and I guarentee you will not be disappointed.

Originally, and maybe at heart, a blues man, Gary Moore could hold his own on the rock stage. Innovative playing and an obvious love of the guitar made him really special. Saddened to hear of his death earlier this month especially as I had only just " discovered " him.

Of course i know them, but do you consider Hendrix or Santana as prog guitarists? Ok, maybe it's true that the piece i've posted does not sound as Genesis or Yes or Van der graaf, but in general Patto are listed as a progressive band, even if they have different influences. Anyway i like progressive, but there's not a prog guitarist that i would list as a favorite of mine

Mike, you are absolutely right in pointing this out; Akkerman is indeed a great progressive rock figure!

Intersting program about Steve Windwood last night. Did not realise he was still so active in the music scheme although i was aware he had teamed up with Clapton, for the first time since Blind Faith. Still like Traffic.

Classic band Teddy, one of my all-time favorites, as is Stevie Winwood.

If you like Steve Winwood, my fave is his playing with Jimi Hendrix on Electric Ladyland,
jamming on organ while Jimi played and sang.

I still like him from The Spenser Davis Group, "Gimme Some Lovin" and "I'm A Man".

Every time I see the name Jan Akkerman one of his riffs starts surging through my brain.
He knew not only how to write them, but how to play them to get them down and deep.

They are both fine musicians indeed.

I'm not sure if he has been cited already, but--if not--then I'd like to include Mike Oldfield among this group of influential prog rock guitarists, as well as other instruments he has played and used at various times.

Yes, I think he has been Steve, but always worth a mention. I still occassionally play Tubular Bells.

Yeah, Teddy, I have Tubular Bells on vinyl packed away somewhere with my hundreds of other lps which we never uncrated after we moved here some 8 years ago! i am strongly thinking of buying the cd. Amazon, here I come.
