Ligeti's piece may be many things. Unless the meaning of "con job" has changed drastically in the last week or two....at least it was music which is more than could be said for the con job of the Metro Gnomes
Hard to imagine how any work could be a con job. I suppose that a program note or some other commentary on it could be. But the piece itself? It's not pretending to be anything other than it is. It's not trying to trick you or get money out of you. It's just itself, a group of machines making sounds that create rhythmical patterns, which result simply from the setup, not from any notation.
You may or may not like the idea. You may or may not like the results. But whatever is happening to you, being conned is not one of them.
