Another "what's the world coming to" rant

Lazy postmen and other home delivery persons, latest trick I've heard is the postie who put a "sorry you were out" card into an open door (not through the letterbox) the person expecting the parcel called the postie back from the gate saying "I'm not out so let's have me parcel"

Postie had left the parcel at the sorting office rather than carry it.

Similar things have been reported about other delivery services. They get their round finished earlier and either spend the time saved in the betting shop or café before going back to the depot, or going home early.

Ours is usually alright, sometimes he has been known to leave a parcel under the landrover. There is a note through the door saying where it is.

Once I had a parcel left behind a pot plant out the front of the house. It was not long afterwards we had almost all the pot plants from the front of the house stolen, along with several pieces of gardening equipment.

Oh no that is awful, you do wonder who would do such a thing.

Yes, it seems very low, doesn't it. Things like this seem to happen a reasonable amount around where I live - things like chairs being stolen out of people's front yards, solar decorative lights being stolen, sometimes pets even get stolen! We have a section in a local newspaper where we can write in and tell everybody about such things, and once someone responded by writing that if people don't want their furniture stolen, they should keep it where no-one can get to it. It seems a very harsh thing to say, but is all too relevant for this day and age.

I find that living in a village the postmen and milkmen occupy a slightly different role than they may do in the cities. People tend to know them (and wave to) even if they do not get an opportunity to speak. They have an awareness of the village life and events and tend to keep an eye open as they go on their rounds. Parcls may be left "next door" with an accompanying note etc.` Just one advantage of living in a small(ish) community. The fact that the postmen can speak and read English also helps.

yeah, the "westernised oriental gentlemen" we often get can't tell the difference between 45 and 45A, some even appear to have difficulty distinguishing between Library Road and Layton Road, living on the corner we often get mail for both.

We live at number 13, and we get mail for nearly all the number 13s on the estate.

That is unusual Margaret. I did not think that 13 was used at all. I know that hotels do not normaly have a 13th floor. Obviously you are not superstious.

Not really, we have lived here for 23 years. There are 13s all over this town, so I expect the builders were not superstitious.

Living in the country we have what is called a 'rural delivery'
of parcels and mail, the service is run as private enterprise and the mail man is a friend so we have no problems, I must add this is one of the better results of privatisation, most are disasters.

And another thing...

My wife has just returned from Tesco. They are playing football supporters music all over the store. All the women are complaining as it is not conducive to shoping. Even some of the staff are bored with its repetetivness. She approached three of the managers and asked for it to be at least turned down. They all basically shrugged their shoulders, so she eventually left the store. Too many places play obtrusive music these days. I myself left a tiling specialist store recently because of loud RAP music. Unfortunately I was playing some jazz, admitedly rather loudly, when she returned.
I must go and look for the sticking plaster now.

I hate it when awful music is played too loud. My supermarket doesn't play any music.

Our supermarket plays a variety of things, ranging from mainstream pop hits, to 70's rock, to 'canned' music. I assume it's whatever the person who's in charge at the time wants to listen to. What I found really interesting was a few months ago, when I was at a shopping mall. (Shows how much I like shopping. I must get new clothes this summer; I'm a freaking slob.. ) There is a fairly large area there for relaxing, with a garden, fountain and benches. The music playing as I walked into this oasis was Debussy's La Mer! Not only was classical music being played at a shopping mall, but one of my favourite pieces, no less. :up: Of course, in the shops themselves was the usual techno music blaring. Made for quite the contrast. :grin:

As to our mail service, no complaints so far.

I remember when staying at the Dorset Hotel in Salzburg, they actually played "elevator music" in the elevators ... and ... of course, Mozart, no less . In fact, Mozart was the background music in the lobby, too.

In the store where I work, we play a local radio station ... classic rock of the 70's, 80's and 90's mostly. There are days when I tune in the local classical station and get the deer-in-the-headlights stares from customers like they are asking, what the hell is that playing?

My pet peeve are the rap crap people ... people who insist upon letting you know that they like their music and you need to hear it too ... from 1 mile away with the bass notes rattling everything around.

My only complaint about mail service here is that they keep delivering bills due :lol:
