What is the most violent storm you have been in?

What's the worse storm that you have ever been in? My hometown
of Madisonville was hit by a tornado two years ago last fall. I just so
happen to be lucky to find the local newspaper office open and I stayed
there until the storm passed. Luckly thank God no one was hurt or
killed. But the storm left the south end of Madisonville looking like a
war zone. Recently we are enduring floods. How about you?

Back in 1980 I was inside a house and precisely at midnight a bolt of lightning struck a tree that was maybe 75 feet from the house - man, what a horrendously noisy and thunderingly booming report after that bolt - It was so bright for about three seconds - like daytime brightness. I had a temporary deafness, followed by a powerful ringing in my ears for about fifteen minutes because of the loud thunder. Then I had a nasty migraine for the rest of the night.

Hi CT64,

Yeah, I almost crapped and pissed in my pants - my dog at that time started yelping and pissed and shat all over the floor. She had a real nervous breakdown - she whimpered for the next 24 hours until a good friend who was a vet and acupuncturist gave her a course of treatment that involved 100 acupuncture needles. In three hours she was back to her normal happy go lucky self.

Cheers,

Middle 80's ... similar situation as Corno Dolce, except the lightning hit the chain link fence 7 feet from the house ... it was the most brilliant white I have ever seen in my life ... and of course the associated noise was indeed deafening ... The chain link fence survived, albeit a bit scorched but intact. Fortunately it was not connected to the house, so the electrical discharge went straight to ground.

The worst "storm" I´ve ever been in. With absolutely no comparison to any other storm. When the Danish IRS accused me personally and the former company my old friend and partner Niels and I, created in 1986 ín Brussels - on charges for taxavasion in 2004. The "storm" lasted 4 years. Numerous lightnings and rolling thunder along the 4 years, until finally the storm lost all it´s power and vanished into thin air, equals the Danish IRS giving a written apology for the unreasonable accusation and handing back almost 130.000 dollars to me personally. It was after I entered the MIMF, coincidence or not?

Well I am lucky where I live, there are no bad storms. Just heavy rain and strong winds.

Mostly twigs lying on the ground after.

When I was young, if we had thunderstorms the house would often get struck by lightning. The electricity would go off, and the phone too. We had a cupboard under the stairs, where we kept a supply of candles and matches. Eventually a lightning conductor (Von Karajan?) was put up and we had no more trouble.

Corno Dolce, that fulgurite, looks just as if someone should blow a tune on it.

Hi Ms. Margaret,

Oh Wow! Lightning hitting the house often - man, that would kind of freak me out. Thank goodness it did not cause your house to go up in flames.

Hi Corno Dolce

No luckily the house stayed safe.

It was kind of exciting for us kids.

Hi Ms. Margaret,

Yes, I can imagine that some youngsters can find the flash and bang of a thunderstorm quite exhilarating. Back in the spring of 2006 I was talking to a friend in the backyard, it was sunny and somewhat humid but there were thick clouds that covered the mountains that were about five miles away.

All of a sudden I hear this sound just above my head - like when someone goes fly-fishing, casting the hook, line and sinker - sort of like a "WHIZZ" sound only much louder. Then a bright flash and an earth shattering boom. The incident was quite scary since I later found out that a bolt of "Positive Lightning" had been detected in the vicinity where I was by the US Marine Corps Air Base just down the road.

Here's an article about "Positive Lightning":

Hi Ms. Judy,

Its the positive lightning bolts that kill - man, what a way to go - but since everthing happens so quickly, there is no pain or suffering felt. The amperages, voltages and temperatures involved are too great to comprehend.

Cheers,

Hi Corno Dolce

That is very interesting reading. As you say at least death is quick.

We used to have an electricity pylon, just at the back of our garden. When there was a thunderstorm the elctricity cables used to glow blue. Very pretty but a little disconcerting.

They have now removed the pylon and burried the cables underground. The house at the back of us now has a slightly bigger back garden.
