It has been a very long time since I have been so gripped by a piece of classical music I heard for the first time. Although composed about 30 years ago, there is nothing modern about these Russian songs for baritone (sotto voce throughout) and piano - I would have believed a 19th century composer as well. But they are breathtakingly beautiful. Give them a try!
