Tommy Bolin Hush Magazine 15th Anniversary Issue

Hush Magazine (Spain) has published it’s 15th Anniversary Special Tommy Bolin Issue out now (please see attached photo of magazine cover). Bolin, the late guitar player from Sioux City, Iowa of such bands as Zephyr, The James Gang, and most notably Deep Purple. Bolin is also regarded as a pioneer in the jazz fusion age of the late 60’s and early 70’s passed away in December of 1976. In 2000 his second solo album was certified Gold by The Recording Industry Artists of America (RIAA).

Local Sioux City resident Trace Keane came up with the original idea and conducted over one dozen interviews with many of Bolin’s former band mates, family members, and friends along with many never before seen photos. Included in this issue are interviews with Kenny Passarelli (Joe Walsh & Barnstorm, Elton John Band, and bass player for Crosby Stills & Nash and Yousef Islam formerly Cat Stevens), Stanley Sheldon (The Peter Frampton Band & Frampton Comes Alive), Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas, Johnnie Bolin brother of Tommy Bolin and drummer for Black Oak Arkansas, Bobby Berge of Zephyr, The Tommy Bolin & Buddy Miles Bands, David Givens of Zephyr, former Sioux City native Russell Bizzett of Jose Feliciano’s band, and many, many others. Keane has also booked and produced scores of radio documentaries nation wide related to the late Deep Purple guitarist. Hush Magazine of Vigo Spain is printed entirely in Spanish. English translated articles will appear on the Tommy Bolin website in December.

This is a hot memory for me, doing a Tommy Bolin tune when he recorded with Deep Purple.
I was already doing six Deep Purple songs in rock bands, but Tommy Bolin brought a new thing,
a funky thing, with rock, a fusion thing, very interesting.
I learned "Sail Away", and it took over two weeks before I could sing and play it together,
a very difficult combination of guitar riffage and vocal timing. The bassist sang the lead vocal.

"When you're drifting on an empty ocean, with no wind to fill your sail,
the future's your horizon, it's like searching for the holy grail.
I feel like I'm going to surrender, bad times I've had enough.
If I could find a place, to hide my face, I believe, I believe I could get back up.
Time will show. When, I don't know.
Sail away tomorrow, sailing far away, to find or steal or borrow,
I'll be back some day, hey hey hey, hey hey hey-eee-hey-eee-ayyyy..."

Yeah, 1977!

Guys, upon further research. I realized that I had indeed confused Tommy Bolin with Marc Bolan of T Rex fame. Please disregard my prior post and forgive me for my ignorance. Thanx. Peace Out--WK

Tommy Bolin can be confusing, no musical doubt about that.
I think it's rare that a bassist became so musically influential.
The fact Deep Purple picked him up and put him on world stages shows that.
Deep Purple might not even sound as spacey and fried as many new bands, some now just metal,
but they were rock innovators, inventing new applications for sound and band styles.
Writing about cars and as a band, sounding like you're changing gears, might not seem hot.
Standing all dressed in white, strumming a small, golden harp, while a soft spot shone down,
singing the pre-cosmic intro, the slow part, for "Sweet Child in Time", was just another piece of the Purple puzzle.

You gotta love a bass player who can pull you down into the musical depths.

Rock music isn't a topic, it's a lifestyle.
You should be glad you weren't there to go through all that.
We're both alive, that's real good, and researching rock just sounds so bad.
And... and... if you want rock credibility, you don't want to sound too official.
As a matter of fact, if you were here right now, I'd get a little raunchy,
and cool you off, with some snow down your neck.

Wait! Wait! I think I just heard an old frozen echo melting, a riff from George Benson when he played Art Park.

Yes, I know it's a big state, but have you ever heard of Marc Myers?
He's part of www.jazzwax.com/ and has a really nice online jazz and overall music link.
He'll send you monthly emails from this magazine, and he comes to Canada to host a jazz radio show.
I'd sign up for everything he has to offer.

I moved again, but I've got to unpack my guitar stuff and finish my refinishing.

tommy bolin i just love him .the best guitarist in deep purple ever.his playing with billy cobham is fantastic. i had the teaser record now i have it on cd. i was lucky to see tommy live with deep purple in the 70s, he played some songs from teaser that was so cool. see you soon from funk jam

Aaaah Tommy Bolin. I saw him have a poor concert with deep Purple at Wembley Arena where he was booed and the crowd kept shouting for Blackmore (the previous guitarist) who was then in Rainbow. The new Teaser mix is very different from Bolin's original release CD- now discontinued. Get both if you can. Meanwhile back with Tommy Bolin.. they've just reissued his Teaser solo album.. and it is very very different from the original. You should have them both.. but the original is hard to come by now...
