The Blues

To Whom It May Concern,

It was once sang, that “if you don’t like the blues, you have a hole in your sole.” And why this may have been referring to the blues and their resonance with many emotional issues, it crosses boundaries and makes a direct point. Blues has influenced every major modern musical genre, including Rock and Roll, folk rock, Country, Pop, Hip Hop, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass, Jazz, and more, but receives little recognition for its time honored roots. This above all disturbs me as any music listener should take time to explore the roots of their music.

Secondly, the modern musicians who hold true to this music of the soul receive less recognition than their musical counterparts in the other genres. The point is even if you have never heard of Muddy Waters, W.C. Handy, Jonny Lang, Memphis Minnie, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, or any other blues artist, take a good luck at your musical collection and trace the roots. The Blues have been around for near a century and their power to move the soul has long been established. This is an American genre to the core. And with modern acts such as Jonny Lang putting out quality blues to this day, this music should not and will not be forgotten so easily.

The impact can not be denied and this legendary genre should time honored. Take the time and rediscover a genre that has been the soul of American music since its first published album in 1912. If you love the blues or are even discovering the blues for the first time, take a second, and spread the message of the blues.

Sincerely,
A Blues Fan

Personally I like the blues and I've got several blues CDs which I enjoy very much, with artists such as B.B.King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and others. The last one I bought was B.B.Kings "Blues On The Bayou" - very cool stuff.

Many forms of music owe a lot to the blues, and it is unfortunate that, like classical music, it doesn't get the recognition it really deserves.

However, the blues continues to live on and there are a number of promising young talents emerging who will ensure it survives at least into the near future.

Frederik - Those are probably three of the greatest blues musicians and make up a significant portion of my CD collection. I'm also a big Robert Johnson fan, though you really have to hear past the poor recording capabilities in his day to truly appreciate the music. I do believe my better half thought it had been recorded on a mobile phone when she first heard it!
