I love the music – a film to watch, glass of wine in hand, when the other half is out and I can sing along – but it does rather whitewash the Austrians and make it appear that barely any of them beyond a few naive youths were Nazis. It is also a bit sugary at times.
As a whole, I think that
South Pacific is a better, all-round Rogers & Hammerstein show – good themes (racism and ageism to name but two), super music and, in terms of the film, Rossano Brazzi...
For wtwt5237, I'd suggest that
Cabaret is an absolute must-see.
Chicago isn't bad – just can't live up to the stage show, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, there's not really been any decent attempts to film any Stephen Sondheim shows – I'm eagerly awaiting Tim Burton's version of
Sweeney Todd.
Otherwise, I'd always recommend
The Music Man for the pure joy of Robert Preston's ebulliant performance. Indeed, a personal favourite is
Victor/Victoria, also with a superb performance from Preston.
And for something completely different, so to speak, there's always
The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
