My first exposure to the Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto was a recording by Lazar Berman & Abbado, back in the age of vinyl. Since then, I've also heard Rachmaninoff himself in an old mono recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Horowitz in the Carnegie Hall disc with Ormandy, and live performances by Garrick Ohlsson and Lang Lang.
However, my very favorite rendition of this is by Martha Argerich and Chailly. You don't have to just take
my word for it... the "Gramophone Guide" has it on their '100 great recordings' list.
I have this CD on the proverbial "Desert Island' list.
