Has anyone heard this album? I think it's one of the few albums to fuse prog-rock and world music. Really nice. Recommended to Enigma fans...

I have not heard the album, but I went over to Amazon and listened to the clips from each of the songs. It sounds very interesting, I'm going to see if they have it at my local library, and I might buy it if they don't.
I especially like track 1 (traditional middle-eastern stuff with a beat), track 4, 10, 11, 14, 17, 19.
Where else can I hear music like this?

Yes, nice stuff. I think Gladiator score is really close. Also, try Kingdom of Heaven score. Enigma's 2nd and 3rd albums contain some Middle-Eastern textures. Also, score to Mel Gibson's Passion of The Christ is worth checking out.
As for prog-rock/world stuff, you can listen to some of Yes' albums or solo works by Jon Anderson.

My list is growing. Thanks for the recommendations. It sounds like those Enigma albums are something I really need to check out. I've seen Passion of The Christ, but it was prior to my interest in soundtracks.
My wife is going to kill me after my return from my next trip to Best Buy.
I have the soundtrack myself (from the movie "The Last Temptation Of Christ").
I think it's always hard to classify Peter Gabriel's music (and that's a good thing in my book
), but I absolutely agree this is a succesful fusion - or crossover - between prog-rock and world music (and some other genre too). It's a great heartfelt film score with much intensity, quite moving at places.

I picked up Passion today and listened to it one time through while driving back and forth doing erands in the car. It's a little more slow-developing and quiet than I thought. I think the sound clips at Amazon pretty much pick out some of the peak moments in those songs. Nevertheless, it sounds fantastic, and I'm thrilled to have learned of it here.

I'm a fan of Peter Gabriel but haven't got this album. I have heard quite a bit from it and it sounds good. One of my favourite Gabriel albums is PG IV, which is where he took plenty of African rhythms, and fused them into his songs. a great one is 'The Rhythm of the Heat'. I saw Ekome playing at one of his gigs who were great - suspect that may have been a long time ago.

Passion is a great album.
It's really versatile, it's good for background music, it's good to concentrate on, it's good for driving around.
So many sounds, and really interesting arrangements. Since Peter didn't have to please a pop audience (though I do love his other stuff), he was able to just explore moods and textures in ways he never had before (or since, really).

I can recommend the Passion album by Peter Gabriel. It certainly seems to encompass all that is good about his work for me. I think he is quite underrated and has been for most of his career which is quite sad, but I guess he doesn't get a lot of hassle as others seem to.
Enigma as well I would recommend although not above Peter Gabriel!

This disc is regular listening in our house. Also worth hearing if anyone hasn't is "Passion Sources" which as the title obviously suggests, contains tracks which were the sources of many of the samples used in the Passion disc.
I love PG - he's so superbly versatile and has produced such distinctive tracks thanks to his dallliances with the World. I was listening to "Signal To Noise" this morning (from "UP") whilst walking to the bus: the surroundings were silent and dark and hearing the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn from beyond the grave over that incredible string and percussion crescendo always brings a shiver to the spine. I don't believe the Western society's exposure to World Music would be what it is without PG.

Passion is indeed a key album in world fusion music. The pedigree of musicians involved is impeccable: L Shankar on violin (of Shakti fame), Jon Haseell on trumpet (see Fourth World disc he cut with Brian Eno). Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on vocals! Unbelievable.
Much imitated ever since on numerous film soundtracks.
I also would highly recommend 'A Long Walk Holme' Gabriel's soundtrack to the brilliant film 'A Rabbit Proof Fence'. The blending of organic electronic textures and real instruments is extraordinary. I had previously thought of electronic sounds as necessarily cold and synthetic but this music was a real turning point for me. The music carries an overwhelming emotional power, for me even more so than 'the passion'. I especially love the way the drums of the Dhol Foundation carry the music to its climax.
