New to Classical Music

Hi,

I am not a musician, just a corious listener and, this week, I started with Classical Music. I keep asking myself why did i wait so long?
I started with Beethoven and I'd Like a suggestion:

Somebody told me of two 9-Symphonies "versions": Hogwood and Gardiner. Could anyone help me which I choose?

I would say neither.

Of the older school performances, Krips and von Karajan and Böhm are good choices.

Of the newer ones, I would think Abbado or Zinman or Masur would be preferable to Gardiner or Hogwood.

But that's just me. Indeed, you'll probably get as many suggestions as there are recordings of this piece. I'll just add that I bought the Gardiner set of all nine symphonies by Beethoven, because I'd liked what I'd heard from Gardiner up to that point. I listened to them all once or twice. Then I didn't listen to them at all for several years. Then I listened to number eight a couple of months ago, and realized why I'd not listened to them much since I'd bought them. Because they're not very good. Superficially exciting and fresh sounding, but not something to return to again and again.

You can't go wrong with Beethoven, try the Gardiner, and give Beethoven's String Quartets a listen later on when your ear gets tuned. I have just listened to the Abbado with the Berlin S O, not bad but his 2nd cycle is
considered better than the first

Welcome, rdabra. I'm glad that you are enjoying classical music. It's hugely underrated these days.
One thing to try is to check at a library to see if they have any recordings of Beethoven's symphonies, so you can listen and decide which you like before buying.
