The interactions of M. Dean Lawrence (vox, percussion, acoustic guitars, djembe) and Gordon Filipchuk (keyboards, bass, accordion) confirm the confidence of Canadian band MORTAL PORTAL. Their 48-minute debut CD Aloneman is a mellow work with hypnotic groove bearing resemblance to early Pink Floyd. Art cover provides good metaphor for the musical content. Most songs have a space rock approach but psychedelic and jazz components floating around. Taken as a whole, this release is solid and likeable. The musicianship is universally competent. The vocal melodies are very nice

Now I am curious to what these guys are going to do with their next album, with their grown experience. Hopefully, Mortal Portal can bring some different emotions, to make the atmosphere more diverse. Until then, Aloneman remains a pleasant CD to listen to.
