There are all types of chants to choose from these days -- traditional or modern, Sanskrit or English, kundalini or kirtan, raga-based or contemporary-music, and other endless variations and combinations. But the new recording by Megan Chaskey called NAAM RADIANCE is a delectible blend of old and new that you can sit down and listen to, put on at your next board-games party, or take to your next yoga class. The Sanskrit chants are two-thousand-years-old, but the music was written by Chaskey. The beginning and end of the CD features soft and slow chillout music while the middle section has rhythmic get-up-and-move pieces.
Chaskey handles all the lead vocals (with some background support from singers Leslie Ritter and Beth Reineke -- both fairly-well known in the folk world). There are only four musicians making the music, but what a distinguished group -- Grammy-Award-winning cellist David Darling, percussionist Mike Guglielmo, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Petito, and Celtic harpist Aine Minogue. Wow!
This music is a perfect modern blend of new age and world-fusion with touches of folk and neo-classical. This is beautiful and deeply-stirring music. If you have any interest whatsoever in chant music, you owe it to yourself to check this recording out.
