Following the release of demo EP ‘Man in the Balloon’ (2013) MAZE OF SOUND unleash their first full-length album entitled ‘Sunray’. This Polish group consists of Kuba Olejnik (vocals), Piotr Majewski (piano, synthesizers, violin), Rafal Galus (guitars), Maciej Kuliberda (guitars), Bartosz Sapota (bass), Grzegorz Sliwka (drums & percussion). Soundwise, they combine ingredients of neo-progressive rock with a slant to modern prog style. The best comparison which I can offer is Sylvan – because of emotional power and vulnerability, quirky nuances, a mixture of heavier riffs interspersed between gentle touches...Next up, at various points there’re echoes of Pallas, Marillion and (perhaps) Pain Of Salvation. The sections tend to touch a range of influences, both old and recent. Approximately 52 min. set of nine tracks on ‘Sunray’ is covering a diversity of moods and tempos. Right from the onset of ‘Rain Charmer’, this CD grabs your attention and not letting go till the closing moments of final ‘Memory’. Having a superb keyboardist in founder member Piotr Majewski gives the music additional depth and invention. A plenty of metal-edged guitar lines intermingle with strong rhythmic foundation. On the top of that all comes Kuba Olejnik whose sensitive voice is reminiscent of Marco Glühman. Quite important detail for the band’s modus operandi. To summarize, I think this excellent Polish act have a lot to offer and promise much for the future. But enjoy their debut album for now!!
