I was kinda suprised that their wasn't a Mars Volta topic here yet.

Well if you don't know who they are... they are many of the members from the band, At the Drive-In. Mars Volta has to be one of the best progressive bands out there today in my opinion. They are also incredibly creative and unique.

"The Widow" of thier second album, Frances the Mute apparently made it onto the radio, though I can't say I've ever heard them on air (radio here sucks and I don't listen to much of it anyway).

I also missed their show recently when they came to DC on tour with System of a Down.

I then found out that they are actually breaking up after the tour which made missing the show even more bitter.

Anyways,
Does anyone else here share my enthusiasm for Mars Volta?

I absolutely love The Mars Volta! Their debut EP, Tremulant EP, is a very good glimpse of what was to come; lengthy tracks with "weird" lyrics and a distinct sound.

Their first album, De-Loused in the Comatorium is truly an awesome album. With standout tracks like Inertiatic esp and Cicatriz esp. If you haven't heard this album yet and enjoy Frances the Mute, you should do so now!

L' Via L'Viaquez also from Frances the Mute made it on to the Radio, but really only on select stations and an edited version.

I really wanted to like them, liking the stuff from ATDI. But I found De-Loused to be padded out with some of the most boring music I heard in recent years. The thing is, technically they are good musicians and I especially love the singers voice but I just thought it didnt work.

Maybe I need to listen to the 2nd album.

You should definately give their second album a listen, I can't argue that some people don't like the bring down padding of some of their songs, but, I see their albums as being one large piece of music and not sperate "pop-friendly" tracks.

I suppose you could argue that is what Prog Rock is about... the deviations. But there are other bands that go off from their catchy hooks into guitar psychedelica, but others do it better. Pink Floyd, Marillion and Can for example.

Great band!

"Frances The Mute" seems to be more interesting than debut.

I've heard there'd released live album, has anyone heard it?

Some peices on both albums seem to be a little too protracted to me, but in general they are one of the most original bands I've heard recently. They remaind 70 th music a lot and still sound modern

I've only listened to frances the mute, but I'm pretty shure it doesn't go under the "prog rock" label, maybe power rock, prog metal, sth of the sort...

The debut album is great, Frances also but the latter albums seem to miss something these had.

I borrowed Frances the Mute from the local library to hear what all the fuss was about with this band.

After listening to it once right through, with difficulty, and listening once more on the chance that I must have missed something, I'm afraid I still don't know what the fuss is about. Just music with little or no structure that seems to go nowhere.

The expression "Emperor's new clothes" came to mind.
