Interesting choice of bands to compare. Here is my take......

Led Zep (very much a four album band - Led Zep 1 to 4, with 4 getting the lions share of attention for Stairway to Heaven and Whole Lotta Love). What a bit of luck to have your music used as the soundtrack for 'Top of the Pops' in the UK for many years. Not sure what they did later, but Stairway to Heaven has to rate amongst the best rock (not sure about 'prog') tracks of the 1970s.

The Who, to my mind, were more musically adventuous and lasting as a band. Who can forget 'Won't be Fooled Again' either for its lyrics or the music? (We still dance to it in my house!) Timeless theme, but perhaps other tracks on this album are more deserving of a listen ("Behind Blue Eyes" for example). Fantastic rock vocals - rarely equally by others. Tommy was an incredible bit of theatre, but I confess that outside the albums they released in the mid-1970s, I'm not too familiar with their collection.

Black Sabbath - acquired taste, never to mine.

Rolling Stones - never really did it for me, but I can appreciate their contribution to rock music. Great rock disco music, however. My friends played their music to me throughout my entire teens but it never grabbed me to the point I wanted to buy their albums.

The Beatles - have to take it on all the categories you list, and from St Pepper on, probably deserve the 'prog' tag except that other bands had better musicians (in a technical sense). They manage one thing that all enduring bands manage - each successive generation 'discovers' their music afresh. When that happens, you know a band did something special to begin with.....

It is really hard to determine which of these bands is the best. Maybe it really depends on the listener. For my personal choice, I choose Beatles as the best among the choices.

I have a generational perspective!!! These bands all emerged when I was growing into/or becoming an adult. What do I think of them now? The one band that has "survived" the longest, meaning, that I still enjoy re-visiting is.....Black Sabbath. Now, remember, that's after some forty years of hearing the Beatles, etc. Why do I feel this way after 30-40 years? Musicality. Black Sabbath has got it. They inject one with a healthy dose of creative composition. Just an opinion from the older stratum of the demographic mushroom!!!

None of these is real progressive rock. The Beatles probably came closest to it, though with some of their later works. As a band, the Beatles for me are by far the best of these five.

Yes I agree......

Prog is just a term, and who is to say what is and isn't. But you could say they have all had their prog moments.....

Beatles surely were - though perhaps the phrase had not been coined at that time. The Stones were also experimenting with ethnic instruments, effects and weirdness too in the late sixties. When the Beatles split, the stones turned into a straight rock outfit.

Has anyone seen the footage of Led Zep (in Denmark?) from '69 where Jimmy Page plays his telecaster with a violin bow. Great stuff indeed! (actually not the first person to do this, anyone heard of the Creation?). And there are the unusual guitar tunings he used - definately pushing boundaries

Black Sabbath are more straight rock (although still great) - I can't think of a track that I would regard as progressive, although you could argue the concept of a rock-horror band was progressive in itself. The song 'Black Sabbath' is certainly unlike most preceding music

Whos the best players - tough one. I don't believe you can answer this. Its like saying 'whats the best sauce, ketchup, mustard or wasabe' - it depends on whats going with it. Paul McCartney definately the best bassist -Jagger the best singer - Jon Bonham the best Drummer - Jimi Page the best Guitarist, but if you put them together it could possibly have tasted foul!!!!!!!!

Zepplin and the Stones pushed the boundaries of Prog Rock, more so than any other band. If you listen to Zepplin IV and "Sticky Fingers" you'll hear a variety of styles that are not heard from bands today, or from Sabbath, The Who, and the Beatles. For instance, Sticky Fingers runs the gamuet from hard rock, blues, country, jazz fusion, while Zep IV delves into folk music. But what's really special about Zepplin and the Stones, that eventhough they experimentent successfully with other musical strains, they still maintained a very strong sense on how the band's core sound should remain, producing classic hard rockers such as Brown Suger, Bitch, Black Dog, Rock and Roll.

Great topic!

The majority of these groups had already broken up or were not actively recording when I was growing up (I'm an 80's child), but in terms of personal preference I've always loved Led Zeppelin.

In terms of contribution to society, I'd have to say that I think The Beatles did a lot to change the face of music. They were groundbreaking in terms of opening new doors for music. They are also pop culture icons and it would be hard to find someone who hadn't heard of them. They've influenced so many other musicians and they're still doing it today.

To be honest, I couldn't name you one Rolling Stones song, while I could name you at least one song from the other bands. That's not to say that they didn't make an impact on music, but I think they are an aquired taste.

The Beatles! I just find their music more interesting than the rest. The Stones and Sabbath are interesting as well, but listening to The Beatles is almost like watching a movie and listening to music at the same time.

All these bands had very nice creators, the best must means the one you best like. Maybe all of this bands weren't real progressive Rock, but all of them had their progressive moments, specially The Beatles, The Who and Led Zeppelin.
